Hi Guys

I originally posted this thread a couple of weeks ago, regarding my wifes laptop. At that time I only had one responder. But because I mentioned that I also had another problem with an infected 2 in 1 Tablet (these items both belong to my wife) it was considered (by the responder) that both items were infected and so my thread was moved to 'Am I Infected'. However, by the time my thread reached it's new location, I had already fixed the 2 in 1 Tablet.

So, that said, this thread is only about my wifes laptop. Since it's upgrade from Vista to Win7 Home Premium, it has been mega slow and It's not getting updates...

I've run a few tests and the results are as follows...

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, infected objects...None

Spyware Terminator, spyware...None

McAfee Security Scan Plus...No issues found

AVAST found nothing

Super Anti Spyware found nothing

No protection ware that I have run has found anything.

Although I can manually run Windows Update, it goes on and on but I don't get offered any updates. in the end I switch it off. It isn't even trying to push me to install Win10, which is very odd??!!.

I've moved this thread back to Win7 for two reasons...

1 - I don't believe that the laptop's problem is anything to do with an infection.

2 - I think that the guys at...'Am I infected'...have taken the rest of the week off, as I haven't heard a peep from them at all.

Before being moved I was asked to provide information from both 'MiniToolBox' and 'Speccy', below is that information. and although I'm no expert, it seems to me that much of the problem if not all, lies with a 'corrupted index catalog' ...

Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit version 1.8.1.1189 (HKLM\...\Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit_is1) (Version: 1.8.1.1189 - Malwarebytes)  - Bpth Hitman Pro Alert and Anti-Exploit accomplish the same thing and reside in memory. Remove one. I recommend uninstalling Anti-Exploit. But, your Event Errors suggests a problem with Hitman Pro Alert. If you have the licenses uninstall both and see how the computer responds.

McAfee Security Scan Plus (HKLM\...\McAfee Security Scan) (Version: 3.11.266.3 - McAfee, Inc.)  - Use Avast

SpywareBlaster 5.4 (HKLM\...\SpywareBlaster_is1) (Version: 5.4.0 - BrightFort LLC)  - Use Avast

If you do not use Windows Live then remove the following.

Windows Live Essentials (HKLM\...\WinLiveSuite_Wave3) (Version: 14.0.8117.0416 - Microsoft Corporation)

Windows Live Sign-in Assistant (HKLM\...\{45338B07-A236-4270-9A77-EBB4115517B5}) (Version: 5.000.818.5 - Microsoft Corporation)
Windows Live Sync (HKLM\...\{B10914FD-8812-47A4-85A1-50FCDE7F1F33}) (Version: 14.0.8117.416 - Microsoft Corporation)
Windows Live Upload Tool (HKLM\...\{205C6BDD-7B73-42DE-8505-9A093F35A238}) (Version: 14.0.8014.1029 - Microsoft Corporation)

A install of Avast will download and install Dropbox. If you do not use it uninstall it.

Uninstall Avast. Reinstall but do a Customize install and only select File and Web shields. The other modules especially one called NG can slow a computer.

Just after uninstalling the above programs and avast see how the computer responds. If you notice a slowdown again after installing File and Web shield of avast then look at Bidfender Free.  Also make sure Windows Defender is disabled in Windows 7 when running any Antivirus.

Hi JohnC_21

Thanx for responding, there won't be much left when I've finished uninstalling all these. So, yeah it should be faster!. The only things I have an issue with, or rather my wife will fight tooth and claw to keep are Google &/or Bing. I use Yahoo.

However, I feel I should mention that there is nothing in this list that I don't also have on my Win7 Professional 64 bit PC and I'm not having this problem? Oh and I can't see how doing this will make the make the 'Windows Update' start give updates again?

It's possible the fujitsu has a lower processor and RAM. There were a lot of Vista computers that had trouble upgrading to Windows 7. I noticed you had the upgrade assistant so I assume it said the upgrade was possible.

Actually, doing an inplace OS upgrade is not the best. If you can do a clean install and reinstall your programs, that would be the best option but you would need all your program install media and licenses. I know this would require a lot of work so the decision would be up to you.

Avast can run fine on some computers but on others it can cause severe slowdowns.

Edit: The specs on the computer list is as having a T2330 CPU. As you can see from PassMark, the processor is low end on the scale. What processor is on your computer?

Edit Edit: The graphics on the Fujistu is also low end. See here. I recommend you disable Windows Aero if enabled

Hi J

I hear what you're saying regarding the fujitsu and RAM. But she's had most of this stuff on it for the best part of the eight years she's had it, So that doesn't explain the relevantly sudden slow down. It did slow slow significantly some years ago, which is why I added more RAM, which gave it a new lease of life...

"I noticed you had the upgrade assistant so I assume it said the upgrade was possible"

Yes, it gave the upgrade the thumbs up.

What about the 'Windows Update', it only runs if I do a manual search and even then it never finds anything and doesn't stop until I turn it off?

PS I would have done a clean install, however, there were so many things she wanted to keep. Which is why it was easier to do an in place upgrade.

I did disable aero to start with but because it made no difference I re-enabled it.

My Processor is...

Intel Quad Core i7-2600K CPU @ 3.40GHz 3.40GHz

But this is because I use it for MMO RPG's

See my edited post. The processor and graphics are marginal for running Windows 7 vs Vista.

As far as updates go, that has been a problem recently with Windows 7. I believe Microsoft has done somthing to their update servers after moving to Windows 7.

Make sure you disable your AV when checking for updates. That seemed to help me on both computers.

Is IE 11 installed? That is now required to do security updates.

Download and install the latest Update Agent.

If you still cannot update then download the Windows 7 update readiness tool and run it.

See this search I did on the Windows 7 forum regarding update problems.  This post may be helpful.

Definitely a difference in processors.  Personally, I think the processor and graphics on the Fujistu are marginal at best for running Windows 7 optimally, especially with the programs you had running in memory. I would uninstall the programs I listed and see if there is an improvement.

You may also want to test the hard drive with Seatools for Windows.

See if rebuilding the index solves the problem.

I noticed there is a problem with the Secunia Update Agent Service but there is no Secunia Program on the computer. Did you have Secunia on the computer previously.

Yes I uninstalled it, it was supposed to updated, out of date programmes. But it always wanted me to do it, but couldn't even provide links for the updates.

I tried to install 'Windows Update' but the installer said...

Install failed with error number...

Run the troubleshooter.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/910336

Download AutoRuns and look for Secunia under Services. Highlight the service and uncheck the box. If everything runs normally then go back, highlight and press the red X in the menu to remove the service.

You need to update to IE11 first. You can download it here. There will be no updates unless IE11 is on the computer. Did you see the post I linked to.

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/602956/windows-could-not-check-for-updates-automatically/?p=3923685

You can download the latest Flash here. If you do not use IE then only download and install the plugin version.

At the moment it's doing the 'Windows Update Troubleshoot' and...

No, where do you think I got the time to check out...

I'm juggling two PC's here and one of them takes at least a 30 second wait for every keystroke. Also I'm starving, I haven't eaten anything since breakfast and that only consisted of 1 kiwi fruit.

Troubleshooting has finished...

Windows Update Error 0x80070003.............Not Fixed

Service Registration is missing or corrupt....Fixed

Problems installing recent updates...............Fixed

Problems installing recent updates...............Fixed

Problems installing recent updates...............Fixed

It then goes on to say..."Install Windows Update again" but in light of what it says above..."Windows Update Error 0x80070003..Not Fixed", is there any point? In view of what you said, I think I'll update update IE first.

Hang on a minute, the link you provided to update IE is for W7 64 bit?...SORTED

While that's installing, I'm happy to do everything you've asked, but is there any special order that I should be doing them? You know where I'm at, at the moment, but all your earlier suggestions have not been done yet. So while I take a time out for some sustenance and a breather, I'd be obliged if you wouldn't mind writing a list in what order I should be doing everything else, cheers. Although I have to tell you I probably won't be doing them till tomorrow morning. Because reading off a computer screen makes my eyes tired and gives me a headache.

Bad to worse, I've run the install IE 11 update. It said it needed to restart to finish installing. It restarted and for the last 15 minutes the blue circle has been spinning on a tiny window (top left corner of a black screen) the little window says...

Personalyzed Settings

Setting up personalized settings for:

Web Platform Customizations

I have no idea what it is or how long it's going to take. But I'm going for my dinner now. I'll pop back later and see how it's doing?
