Is changing my email from Hotmail to Protonmail worth it? Is it really safer that the traditionally used email service?

I don't know about "safer" but it is definitely more private and secure. It has end to end encryption. Protonmail could not decrypt your email even if required by the authorities and the servers are in Switzerland. This is all pointed out on their website. The person receiving the email also needs to use protonmail if you wish the email to stay private.

Hotmail? Forget it you want complete privacy.
