Wireless says connected but nothing internet-based works.

I've been trying to figure this out for a week and I'm just at my wits end with this one. I can see the network map in network settings and the wireless icon in the taskbar next to the clock clearly says "Internet access", but Firefox /IE are both offline. Can't connect to Dropbox or Skype either. I tried a wired connection and exact same result. Icon changes to wired and notes "Internet access". No go. Any ideas?

 

EDIT: We have 3 computers on the network. The PC I'm on is wireless without problem, my own computer is wired without problem and then the laptop that can't connect to anything, apparently.

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.
 
Checkmark the following checkboxes:
  List last 10 Event Viewer log
  List Installed Programs
  List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
 
Click Go and paste the content into your next post.

Is the date and time correct on this computer?

If you follow the instructions for the Speccy correctly it will produce a hyperlink which will appear in your topic.  When you click on it a great deal of information regarding you computer will be available, not just the individual categories.

 

Please download and install Speccy to provide us with information about your computer.  Clicking on this link will automatically initiate the download.  

 
When Speccy opens you will see a screen similar to the one below.

Please download and run SeatTools for Windows.
 
Before the installation begins you will be prompted to either Decline or Accept the terms of the installation, click on I Accept.
 
Once the installation begins you will see an image similar to the one below.

1.  SeaTools for Windows will search for HDDs and SSDs on your computer.  Please remove any external storage devices connected via USB ports.
 
2.  Detected Drives will list the HDDs and SSDs found.  Place a check mark in the drive box you want to run the scan on.
 
3.  You will see Basic Tests above Detected Drives, move the mouse pointer over this.
 
4.  A menu will open with options for the different scans, please click on Long Generic Test
 
5.  This will start the scan.  When the scan is complete you will see the result under Test Status , please post the results in your topic.

6.  Post the results of the scan in your topic.
 
7.  Click on Help, then click on View Log File.  If the scan failed take a screen shot of the Log File and post it in your topic.

I installed SeaTools for Windows, but unfortunately it doesn't start.

 

The process appears briefly in the task manager and promptly disappears.

 

What now?

Try running the SeaTools in Safe Mode.

 

The Speccy shows a Warning for the hdd attributes for your hdd.  This usually is indicative of a possible hdd failure.

 

If you are unable to run the SeaTools scan please do the following.

 

Please download GSmartControl and run it.
 
When GSmartControl opens it scans your computer for all mass storage devices.  When the scan is finished it will display all of the drives found.  Double click on the drive which contains your operating system.
 
In the next window that opens the Identity tab is selected which displays all of the data pertaining to your drive.

Click on the Perform Tests tab.  When the next window opens select the Short Self-Test, then click on Execute.
 
When the scan has completed it will show that the drive either passed or failed.  If it failed click on the View Ouput.  Copy the text and paste this in your topic.

The short test passed. I'm running the long test now.

The Speccy has a section where it looks at the hdd S.M.A.R.T. attributes.  At the beginning of this the Status for your hdd is "Warning".  This usually is indicative of a problem with the hdd.  Please reopen the GSmartControl and click on the Self-test Logs tab, copy and paste the content in your topic.

 

Please run chkdsk /r
 
Chkdsk /r checks for bad sectors on the HDD and recovers any readable information.
 
Click on the Start orb rsz_1rsz_1rsz_start_orb_zpshjewtibd.png, then type in cmd in the Search programs and files box.  When cmd is seen in Programs above the Search box right click on it, then click on Run as administrator.
 
You will see a screen similar to the one below.

Copy and paste chkdsk /r in the command prompt, then press Enter.  Please note:   
 
You will receive the message "CHKDSK cannot be run because it is in use by another process.  Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts?  <Y/N>".
 
Type in Y and press Enter.
 
Restart your computer to start the scan.
 
This will take a while to run, please be patient and allow it to complete the scan.
 
When the scan is finished please download and run ListChkdskResult.
 
This will open Notepad with the results of the chkdsk scan.  Please copy and then paste this log in your topic.
 
 

 
Please run System File Checker
 
The sfc /scannow command scans all protected system files and replaces corrupted and incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions.
 
Click on the Start orb rsz_1rsz_1rsz_start_orb_zpshjewtibd.png and then type cmd in the Search programs and files box.
 
In the pane above the search box Programs will appear with cmd below it, right click on cmd and select Run as administrator.
 
If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, enter the password, or click Allow.
 
This will open the Elevated Command Prompt, it will look similar to the image below.

Copy and paste sfc /scannow in the command prompt, then press Enter to start the scan.  
 
If the scan finds no integrity  problems the scan will stop.  Type in exit, then press Enter to stop the scan.
 
When the scan is finished and if intergrity issues are found, please do the following.
 
Click on the Start orb rsz_1rsz_1rsz_start_orb_zpshjewtibd.png then copy and paste the following in the Search programs and files box.
 
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >"%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt"
 
This will place a new icon on the desktop titled sfcdetails.  Double click on this icon to  
the CBS log, copy and paste the log in your topic.
 
If this fails to place the icon on your desktop run the command from the Command Prompt.  Use the instructions I provided at the start of this tutorial.
 
This log may be very large, if you have problems posting it try breaking it into smaller parts.  When you copy these parts you will highlight the section you are going to copy.  If you leave that section highlighted it will give you a quick reference for where you left off.
