hi there\

I was hoping for some help with this issue. My Lenovo laptop occasionally restarts out of nowhere. Once it has restarted...all seems ok and there is no error message of any kind. Would anyone be able to help with this? I am not especially computer savvy but feel like I could follow some troubleshooting instructions. Thanks so much!

Wait until it restarts once again, then please generate these reports:

1)  Please run this report collecting tool (even though you may not be reporting BSOD's) so we can provide a complete analysis:  http://omgdebugging.com/bsod-inspector/
When done a Notepad document will open with the name of the file and it's location.
By default it'll be a .zip file located on your Desktop
Simply upload the .zip file with your next post and we'll move on from there.

2)  Please do the following:
- open Event Viewer (run eventvwr.msc from the "Run" dialog)
- expand the Custom Views category (left click on the > next to the words "Custom Views")
- right click on the "Administrative Events" heading
- select "Save all Events in Custom View as..."
- save the file as Admin.evtx
- zip up the file (right click on it, select "Send to", select "Compressed (zipped) folder")
- upload it with your next post (if it's too big, then upload it to a free file-hosting service and post a link here).

FYI - If we're looking for Event ID 41 errors (unexplained shutdowns), there's more info on that here:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2028504

While waiting for a reply, please monitor your temps with this free utility:  http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html

Thank you Usasma!

it might be a while before the next radom restart -- should I be monitoring temps before that happens as well?

if so, does that mean simply opening hwmonitor and having it run ongoing in the background? Ive attached a capture image of the monitor after running for 30 mins. Thanks again!

Temps look OK.  Just leave it running in the background and check it when doing stressful things.

Hi Usasma

Thanks for your help...here are the two files you mentioned. Unfortunately I didn't have the temp monitor going before this recent random restart. What I do know is that I was watching video in the chrome browser for about 15 mins when it happened and the laptop didn't feel warm at all (that may be naive of me to think relevant!).

thanks again -- I really appreciate this!

Actually, feeling for heat is relevant.  I got 2nd degree burns doing that when I trusted a temp monitor (and the sensor was busted)!

I didn't notice anything really significant in the Admin event log - although there is a hint of network issues just before the shutdowns.

Your UEFI/BIOS (version 8CCN34WW(V3.04)) dates from 2014.  Please check at the manufacturer's website to see if there are any UEFI/BIOS updates available for your system.  If you are able to install the update through Windows (without booting from an external drive), then go ahead and update it.  WARNING - if the computer might shut down during this procedure, please don't do it, as this may physically damage the computer and prevent it from booting.

Only 4 Windows Update hotfixes installed.  Most build 10586 (TH2/1511) systems have more than this.  Please visit Windows Update and get ALL available Windows Updates.

The WER section of the MSINFO32 report shows some video issues from January (3 of them) - the older memory dump supports this.

Please follow these troubleshooting suggestions:  http://www.sysnative.com/forums/bsod-kernel-dump-analysis-debugging-information/35-video-tdr-timeout-0x116-0x117.html#post29532

you have been so helpful-- thank you! I checked and there is no BIOS update yet for my machine. I did do all the remaining Windows update however so maybe that will make a difference. I looked at the link for the video troubleshooting suggestions but worry it is too advanced for me. Is there a diagnostic test you recommend in particular?

Thanks again!

Adam

Just follow the steps in the link line-by-line.

If you have a problem with one of the lines, just post back here and ask.
We'll answer your questions as well as we can while you proceed with the testing.

I respect and admire those that come for help here.

First, it's how I got started.

And second, it's the way that you'll learn and become more confident about your computer fixing skills.

Every day at work I see people who would rather throw money at their computer problems than try to understand and fix them.
I'm happy to help those who want to know what's going on and how to fix things!

Good luck!

Hi USASMA

Hope you are very well and taking care. I followed some of the troubleshooting (bios/temps) and my computer seemed to be better for a while and then restarted today out of nowhere while I was browsing the internet on Chrome -- wasn't watching video this time. I have attached the two reports...could you take a peek for me? Thanks so much again!

Adam

Nothing significant in the Admin log file that I can see.

The WER section of the MSINFO32 report shows issues with video.

What were the results of the Furmark tests?

What were the results of the STOP 0x116 troubleshooting that I suggested previously?

I really do feel that this is a hardware error - and that it's most likely with your video card.

Is the system still under warranty?

Hi USASMA

thanks again! I ran the furmark again today for about 1 hour and didn't really notice anything. temps went up to about 75 degrees by the end of that hour and then I stopped it. I am not quite sure if I was supposed to run it longer or not?

The system isn't under warranty any longer unfortunately. As for the STOP troubleshooting -- i wasn't sure which of these to pursue:

"ATI troubleshooting (thanks to Cap'n Jack): How to troubleshoot ?Display driver stopped responding and has recovered?, ATIKMDAG.sys type errors

nVidia troubleshooting (thanks to Vir Gnarus): http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=65161 (link broken at present, but expected to come back up)
Microsoft TDR error troubleshooting KB article: "Display driver stopped responding and has recovered" error in Windows 7 or Windows Vista
In general the articles apply to any make/model of video card (so advice from the ATI link may be applicable to nVidia/Intel/other video cards)"

I am trying to become more savvy here but STOP troubleshooting seems a little advanced for me. Can you offer a starting point?

Thanks so much,

Adam

hi there!

I thought my random restarting issue was resolved but it happened twice in the past week. I just ran the two processes Event Viewer and BSOD and here they are. Any help would be so appreciated -- thanks!
