Hi

I have a cdrom and a dvdrw on a xp home machine. Two weeks ago, they would show up i device manager, but wouldn't do anything. I deleted the upper and lower filters, and all was well for a while. Now, when I put a music cd in either drive, it won't play. The .cda files show up inthe "my computer" view, but no noise. The writer won't burn, I get a prompt that "0" is inaccessable, but (here's the proverbial rub) I can put in a data disc (i.e. photos) and I can see them just fine. No yeild signs in device manager either. I uninstalled both of them and restatrted, and xp found the install files, but no go. Any ideas? It happened to both drives at the same time, and I switched cables, but same thing.

I've got the same problem with an older P4 Dell Dimension 2400. Its a co-worker's old beater that he wants me to resurrect. I did the basic software overhaul as it was full of spyware and viruses and had never been updated. I got everything back to semi-normal except for the exact same problem you mentioned above.

I've swapped them out, tried new cables, nada. I'm wondering if its a mobo issue, bad chipset maybe? I tried installing my own cdroms with the same result. The system recognizes them, they even spin up when a cd is put in, but no data makes it in or out. Device manager says there's a missing or bad driver, but I can't install drivers or firmware from any source. Argh!

Since they appear to be functioning correctly for Windows, but not for other apps - I'd suspect the other apps.

Here's a free, standalone (no installation required) burner app. Try it and see if you can burn with it. If so, then it's most likely your apps.
