Hi gimmneycricket -

Amongst the malware that is on your computer, a couple of them are backdoor trojans/worms. I will discuss this with you after we've cleaned your computer. For now, please follow the directions in the order given. You will need to print or copy these instructions because you will be working in Safe Mode without an Internet connection.

I could not find any information on the program Magentic. If you did NOT install this program, then uninstall it.
Also, as you may know, many p2p programs come bundled with malware. Currently, the only clean version of Limewire is version 4.10.9. If the version of Limewire installed on your computer is NOT this version, then uninstall it.
- Go to Start -> Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs
- Select Magentic
- Click Remove
- Select Limewire
- Click Remove
- Exit.

Please set your system to show all files.
- Click Start.
- Open My Computer.
- Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
- Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files
and folders.
- Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
- Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
- Click Yes to confirm.
- Click OK.

Download and install Ewido Anti-Spyware 4
1. After download, double click on the file to launch the install process.
2. Choose a language, click "OK" and then click "Next".
3. Read the "License Agreement" and click "I Agree".
4. Accept the default installation path: C:\Program Files\ewido anti-spyware 4.0 and click "Next", then click "Install".
5. After setup completes, click "Finish" to start the program automatically or launch ewido by double-clicking its icon on your desktop or in the system tray.
6. The main "Status" menu will appear. You can select "Change state" to inactivate 'Resident Shield' and 'Automatic Updates'. If you choose to do this, then right click on ewdio in the system tray and uncheck "Start with Windows".
7. Go to Start > Run and type: services.msc
  • Press "OK".
  • In Services, click the "Extended tab" and scroll down the list to find ewido anti-spyware 4.0 guard.
  • When you find the guard service, double-click on it.
  • In the Properties Window > General Tab that opens, click the "Stop" button.
  • From the drop-down menu next to "Startup Type", click on "Disabled".
  • Now click "Apply", then "OK" and close the Services window.
8. Select the "Update" button and click "Start update". If you are having problems with the updater, manually update with the Ewido Full database installer from here.
9. Exit Ewido when done.
Do NOT perform a scan yet.

Reboot into SAFE MODE.
To get into the Windows XP Safe Mode, restart your computer and, just before Windows starts to load, tap the F8 key a few times. Choose Safe Mode from the menu that will appear and press Enter.

Start HijackThis, click System Scan Only and place a checkmark next to the following items:
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

If you have uninstalled either Magentic or Limewire or both, then place a checkmark next to the following items as well:
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Magentic] C:\PROGRA~1\Magentic\bin\Magentic.exe /c
O4 - Startup: LimeWire On Startup.lnk = C:\Program Files\LimeWire\LimeWire.exe

Navigate to and delete the following folders if present:
C:\Program Files\Magentic (if you have uninstalled the program)
C:\Program Files\Limewire (if you have uninstalled the program)

Navigate to and delete the following files if present:
C:\Windows\mouse.exe
C:\Windows\system32\server.exe

Clean out your Temporary Internet files.
Close ALL browsers and ALL open windows.
  • Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Internet Options.
  • On the General tab, click Delete Files under Temporary Internet Files.
  • In the Delete Files dialog box, tick the Delete all offline content check box , and then click OK.
  • On the General tab, click Delete Cookies under Temporary Internet Files, and then click OK.
  • Click on the Programs tab then click the Reset Web Settings button. Click Apply then OK.
  • Click OK.
Next Click Start, click Control Panel and then double-click Display. Click on the Desktop tab, then click the Customize Desktop button. Click on the Web tab. Under Web Pages you should see a checked entry called Security info or something similar. If it is there, select that entry and click the Delete button. Click Ok then Apply and Ok.

Empty the Recycle Bin by right-clicking the Recycle Bin icon on your Desktop, and then clicking Empty Recycle Bin

Close ALL open Windows / Programs / Folders.

Scan with Ewido as follows:
1. Launch Ewido, click on the "Scanner" button and choose the "Settings" tab.
  • Under "How to act?", click on "Recommended actions" and choose "Quarantine" to set default action for detected malware.
  • Under "How to Scan?" check all (default).
  • Under "Possibly unwanted software" check all (default).
  • Under "What to Scan?" make sure "Scan every file" is selected (default).
  • Under "Reports" select "Automatically generate report after every scan and UNcheck "Only if threats were found".
2. Click the "Scan" tab to return to scanning options.
3. Click "Complete System Scan" to start.
4. When the scan has finished you will be presented with a list of infected objects found. Click "Apply all actions" to place the files in Quarantine.
5. Click on "Save Report" to view all completed scans. Click on the most recent scan you just performed and select "Save report as" - the default file name will be in date/time format as follows: Report-Scan-20060620-142816.txt. Save to your desktop. A copy of each report will also be saved in C:\Program Files\ewido anti-spyware 4.0\Reports\
6. Exit Ewido when done.

Note: Close all open windows, programs, and DO NOT USE the computer while Ewido is scanning. If Explorer or other programs are open during the scan that means certain files will also be in use. Some malware will insert itself and hide in areas that are "protected" by Windows when the files are being used. This can hamper Ewido's ability to clean properly and may result in reinfection.

Note: If Ewido "crashes" or "hangs" during the scan, try scanning again by doing this:
1. Scan one sector of the system at a time by using the "Custom Scan" feature. To do this select Scanner > Custom Scan and click on Add drive/directory/file. Browse to C:\Windows > System, add this folder to the list and click on "Start Scan". When the scan is complete, repeat the Custom Scan but this time, browse to and add the System32 folder. Then keep repeating this procedure until all your folders have been scanned. Make sure you include the Documents & Settings folder.
2. If this still does not help, then turn the ADS scanner off while making a Custom Scan. To do this select Scanner > Scan Settings and untick "Scan in NTFS Alternate Data Streams". Then repeat the steps above for performing a Custom Scan.

Reboot into Normal Mode.

Post back with the results of the Ewido scan and a new HijackThis log.
Take only memories, leave nothing but footprints.

Hi,

Apparently, your copy of System Mechanic contained spyware so you need to uninstall it.

Go to Start -> Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs
- Select System Mechaninc
- Click Remove
- Exit

Reboot your computer!

Open Notepad and copy and paste the text inside the quotebox in it:

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"key"=-

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce]
"key"=-

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"key"=-

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce]
"key"=-

Save this as fix.reg -> choose to save as *all files -> and place it on your Desktop.
(On your Desktop, it must look like a white sheet with little green boxes on it.)
Doubleclick on it and, when it asks you if you want to merge the contents to the registry, click YES/OK.

Reboot your computer.

Navigate to and delete the following folder if present:
C:\Program Files\iolo

Navigate to and delete the following file if present:
C:\Windows\mouse.exe

Post back with a new HijackThis log. Also, let me know if you encountered any problems following the directions, and how your computer is running now.
Take only memories, leave nothing but footprints.

I'm afraid that I have some bad news. Further research identified C:\Windows\mouse.exe as a backdoor trojan that collects personal information from your computer and relays it to unknown servers. It looks like C:\WINDOWS\system32\server.exe is a related file.

Your passwords are at risk. Also, if you have sensitive data on your computer such as credit cards, bank accounts, perform online tranactions, please see this article.

Do NOT do any banking and/or online purchasing until you are cleaned up. If you have access to an uninfected computer, go change your bank site passwords!

You will need to print or copy these instructions because you will be working in Safe Mode without an Internet connection.

• Download KillBox by Option^Explicit and save it to your Desktop.
Do Not run it yet.

• Reboot into SAFE MODE.
To get into the Windows XP Safe Mode, restart your computer and, just before Windows starts to load, tap the F8 key a few times. Choose Safe Mode from the menu that will appear and press Enter.

• Start HijackThis, click System Scan Only and place a checkmark next to the following items:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [startkey] C:\WINDOWS\system32\server.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Key] C:\WINDOWS\mouse.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [*Key] C:\WINDOWS\mouse.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [startkey] C:\WINDOWS\system32\server.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Key] C:\WINDOWS\mouse.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\RunOnce: [*Key] C:\WINDOWS\mouse.exe

Close ALL browsers and open windows/programs except HijackThis and click 'Fix Checked'.

• Double-click KillBox.exe to open KillBox
  • Select: Standard File Kill
  • Please enter the following filepath
    C:\WINDOWS\mouse.exe
  • Click the red-and-white Delete File button.
Repeat the process for the following file:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\server.exe

Exit the program when finished.

• Reboot into Normal Mode.

• Post back with a new HijackThis log.

Waterfall;
I am so sorry for the time delay in my reply with your last post...I have been without internet for about a week. But am back on line today. This was the first place that I came.....I followed your last instructions as requested. I also took  :flowers: extreem note of what you told me.....
This may be an impossible question and/or request....but is there anyway for you to tell me "from where" or "from what", this trojan got on my computer? I do however have a very strong idea to what that answer is....but would like someone else to comfirm my suspisions.....I think that it came from some crap my 16 year old son downloaded from internet.....It's a version of Yahoo messenger but goes by the name of !Ylite....and along with that little program he then downloaded stuff called booters, and ect... I spent about 4 and half hours going thru crap and deleting stuff........
I did open the system restore and ticked turn off system restore, rebooted and then ticked turn on system restore, as to not reinfect by restoring to old restore point......was that okay?

Here is my new HJT log

Well, mouse.exe was changed to another file, so the infection is still there.

Download Combofix.exe
1. Double-click combo.exe
2. Follow the prompts
3. When finished, it should produce a log, combofix.txt.

Note: Do NOT use your mouse NOR click Combofix's window while it is running. This may very well cause it to stall.

Then download Silent Runners.zip and save it to your Desktop.
  • Right-click onto the file
  • Select "Extract All" -> click "Next"
  • In the "Files will be extracted to this directory" window, type: C:\SilentRunners -> click "Finish"
  • Open C:\SilentRunners and double-click SilentRunners.vbs
  • You will receive a prompt: "Do you want to skip supplementary searches?" - click "NO."
  • If your antivirus has a script blocker, you will get a warning asking if you want to allow Silent Runners.vbs to run.
  • This script is not malicious so please allow it.
  • A text file will appear in the folder - it's not done, let it run. (It won't appear to be doing anything!)
  • Once the "All Done!" prompt flashes up, open the text file, and copy & paste it in your next reply.
Post back with the combofix.txt, the log from Silent Runners and a new HijackThis log. These logs will be long, so you probably will have to break it up in two or three replies. I need to see a comprehensive view of your computer.

Just an FYI regarding your questions. I tend to focus on the problems one is having with his/her computer, but I didn't forget what you had asked.

I couldn't find out anything definite about !Ylite. I will check it out further.

From what I've found out so far is that Booters are programs that can knock people off Yahoo chat rooms. They seem to require the use of "'bots" (robots). The most important aspect that I think you'd be interested in is that they seem to be available on hacker sites for downloading. As you can imagine, hacker sites and their downloads are not known for being pristine. In other words, downloads can be bundled with malware in the same manner that p2p (peer-to-peer) sites' downloads are bundled with malware.

It's important to remember that one should download from sites that s/he trust. Many times, malware can be bundled with legitimate programs.

I'm not saying that this is what happened in your case and, therefore, am not accusing your son of anything. I'm just trying to answer you question as best as I can...

Waterfall,
I seem to be having a problem with the Silent Runners program you wanted me to download.....I was given the option of open or save this file....and I clicked save.....then when completed...I had a SilentRunners.vbs file that had icon like script files do......then I extracted all files to C:SilentRunners.......clicked next....then finished.....then had another SilentRunners.vbs file with the exact same script icon.....double clicked.....and it opened a Silent Runners.vbs Notepad........I never was asked "Do you want to skip supplementary searches.... and waited for 20 min...never got an "All Done!" prompt..... What did I do wrong??????

Hi,

• Please upload the following file: C:\WINDOWS\serve32.exe
to: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/submit-malware.php?channel=8
1. Click on the above link
2. Put this in the window asking for the link to topic:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/60449/gimmneycricket/
3. Then click "Browse" and a "File Upload" window will open
4. Navigate to C:\WINDOWS\ and click onto serve32.exe
5. Click onto "Open"
6. Click "Send File"

• Download F-Secure Blacklight (blbeta.exe) and save it to your C:\ drive.
1. Open a command window by going to Start -> Run and typing: cmd
2. Copy/paste or type the following in the command window: C:\blbeta.exe /expert
3. Hit "Enter" to start the program and then close the cmd box.
4. Accept the user agreement and click "Next".
5 Click "Scan".
6. After the scan is complete, click "Next", then "Exit". BlackLight will create a log in C:\ drive named "fsbl-xxxxxxx.log" (the xxxxxxx will be the date and time of the scan).
7. The log will have a list of all items found. Do not choose to rename any yet! I want to see the log first because legitimate items can also be present...like "wbemtest.exe".
8. Exit Blacklight and post the contents of the log in your next reply.

Note: If you download Blacklight to your desktop, just double-click to run from there and it will create the "fsbl-xxxxxxx.log" on your desktop.

• Reboot into SAFE MODE.
To get into the Windows XP Safe Mode, restart your computer and, just before Windows starts to load, tap the F8 key a few times. Choose Safe Mode from the menu that will appear and press Enter.

• Open HijackThis and run a new HijackThis log. Save the log to your Desktop.

• Reboot into Normal Mode.

• Post back with the results of the Blacklight scan and the new HijackThis log you ran while in Safe Mode.

waterfall,
I uploaded file as requested to link you gave me and got confirmation that it was successful.....
I downloaded Blacklight as instructed.....however, I seem to be having a problem!!!!!! program was saved to my desktop....and was not giving me the expert option before scanning.....so I tried to change the path of the file by right clicking on icon on desktop and selecting cut and opening my computer, C: drive and pasted .........the clicked start, run, cmd, and typed C:\blbeta.exe/expert.....but got message that directory name invalid....tried just C:\blbeta.exe and it opened the program......tried C:\blbeta.exe\expert....directory name invalid....

so, I clicked scan and the next, was given option of showing all processes, and then finish......but it never saved any kind of log file........but it said it found no hidden files,folders,ect..... :flowers:

so what am I doing wrong?????

DeAnna
