Hi there,

Hopefully this is not in a thread somewhere else, I've tried to find one (believe me, cause I'm desperate..).

So in the middle of me writing my master thesis, my computer just decided to die on me two days ago. Luckily, I haven't been that stupid so I've got backups of everything concerning my thesis, but as you can imagine it is not a dream scenario to suddenly not have a computer at all.

Anyways, to the issue:

So what happened is this.

1. In the middle of writing a blue screen comes up, saying that there has been a problem. A sad smiley face "16x16_smiley-sad.gif" came up (I thought to myself that this can't be true. And then it said (translated from Swedish): "A problem has occured on the computer. It needs to be restarted." Something about information about the occurrence being collected.. "..afterwards a restart will take place automatically."

It then added: "If you want more information you can search for this issue online later: KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR

It then restarted after some 30 minutes.

2. It started as normal (allthough a little slow), but then when I logged in almost none of my programs started. Any folder cannot be opened more than 15-20 seconds before it freezes a little bit and then just discontinues "explorer"/the folder and I'm back on the startscreen. Also, WIFI cannot be found whatsoever. Not that I cannot find WIFI, but it seems as if the actual WIFI on the computer just does not work. Or more like it doesn't even exist.

One more thing, If I try to open any Microsoft Office program it says that it is not licensed way before it even starts, and then just exits the program.

I guess that's more or less it. I'm not sure what to do. Should I factory reset or something? Have you come across anything similar? What am I to do? Do you think it's a hardware issue or a software issue?

Oh, and I'm running Windows 7 btw, if that is of any help.

In desperate need of help,

Emil

Here's more info on the KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR:  http://www.carrona.org/bsodindx.html#0x0000007A

Particularly, have a look at the Usual Causes section near the top.

This is often a hardware problem - so start with these free hardware diagnostics:  http://www.carrona.org/hwdiag.html

I'd start with the hard drive tests - but that's just a guess on my part.

Then, Please run this report collecting tool so that we can provide a complete analysis:  http://omgdebugging.com/bsod-inspector/
When done a Notepad document will open with the name of the file and it's location. (By default it'll be a .zip file located on your Desktop)
Simply upload the .zip file with your next post and we'll move on from there.

Thank you so much for your quick answer.

It all looks really alarming, like googling for symptoms and finding all the worst diseases...

If it is a hardware problem, what does that mean? That is something I can't fix by restalling stuff I imagine.

I'll do the tests that you mention. I've tried to read a little as to what I am supposed to find but this all feels a bit a like Greek to me tbh. So I'm not sure I'll understand anything that I'll be doing.

Thank you so much for the help, I'll get to you as soon as possible.

My computer does not have a DVD/CD slot, can this be done through a USB btw?

Best,

Emil

First, please understand that one memory dump doesn't necessarily mean that that is the exact problem.  It takes a full analysis to come to some conclusions about what's happening.

If it's a hardware problem, that means that there's a broken part that'll need replacing.

The memory test can run from a USB.  As an alternative, you can run a hard drive test inside of Windows (I'd suggest the Seagate Seatools for Windows)

We'll need the reports that I requested to give you more information about what's happening with your system.

I've been away for the weekend so I didn't have my non-working computer with me. I'll try and do all these tests tomorrow. However, one worrying thing is that even though I can start windows and all. I can't browse folders and stuff as it crashes and ahuts it down immediately. Not the entire computer, but the folder. So I can't even manage to start the program from the USB..

I'll give it more of a try tomorrow though

Do what you can.

Also, try Safe Mode for that stuff that you can't do (or a clean boot:  http://www.thewindowsclub.com/what-is-clean-boot-state-in-windows )
