Hey Gem,

There are a few steps I want you to complete to try and resolve the slow down on your computer.
A whole host of reasons might account for this slow down, but I will highlight the most prominent ones below.
On most computers malware is the most common cause, but at the moment I do not think this is the case.
You might like to limit the programs that are loading when your computer starts, you might have unneccessary software loading whn you boot your computer which is eating away at your CPU and ultimatley slowing down your computer. Many programs install a quick launch feature which is not needed; if you want to use the program you can start it up manually. The easiest way to see whether a program is needed at startup, you can use bleeping computer's own list, which gives an indication of whether the program is required/optional etc. Note that essential processes such as those for your anti-virus or your modem must be kept.
So, firstly click on start, then run and type msconfig. Then hit enter.
Click on the startup tab and a list of programs will appear.
You can compare the startup name with those on the startup list., link is below:

To stop a program loading at boot just remove the tick.
Click "Ok", and choose to restart.

Please open the Hijackthis program.
Click on the "Do a system scan only".
Place a tick next to the following entries.
Do not be concerned if you cannot find them in the list:

Make sure your Internet Explorer is closed.
Click on the "Fix Checked" button and exit HijackThis when finished.

You might like to try and clear clutter off your computer, and free up some space on your harddrive.
Old games, unwanted photos and unused programs could be a starting point.
You can also clear clutter such as temprary files by doing the following:
Go to start and click on the "run" button.
Type the following in the fox --> cleanmgr and click ok.
Let it scan your system for files to remove.
Make sure only Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are checked.
Press OK to remove them.

Next you can defragment your hard-drive...when was the last time you did this?
Windows puts new files in any available open space and defragging will cluster files closer together making your harddrive more efficient.
This saves wear and tear while speeding up programs.
1. Open My Computer.
2. Right-click the local disk volume that you want to defragment, and then click Properties.
3. On the Tools tab, click Defragment Now.
4. Click Defragment.
5. This process takes quite a long time, so be patient.

Your Java is out of date and the older versions are being exploited by malware.
It is the likely cause of your infection, so we need to get it patched up as soon as possible.
Click on start, then control panel, and then double-click on add/remove programs.
Search in the list for all older installed versions of Java. (J2SE Runtime Environment.... )
It should have next icon next to it: Posted Image
Highlight each and click Remove.
Then Download and install the newest version from here:

Oh yeh and also try running the Windows repair facility:
Go to Start...Run...and type in "sfc.exe /scannow" (without the quotes) and press Enter. It may ask for your XP Installation CD. Once it's done, please visit Windows Update to ensure that you've got the latest hotfixes and updates (sfc.exe replaces system files when it runs).

D-Trojanator,

Thank you for the information. I was trying to use my brother's PC while visiting him last weekend and it was incredibly slow. I tried to clean up a few things before posting, but your information is really helpful. I will forward the information to him and hope that he follows the instructions. If he sends me a new HJT log, I will post it and any successes.

I uninstalled Avast as someone here posted that there can't be two AV software apps. I only saw the one (Avast) that I had installed for him, but I wasn't sure if Windows Defender is considered an AV program-I thought that was more of a popup/spyware type of thing. If it's not AV, then I don't know what the second application being mentioned is and didn't see any other one running (like McAfee or Norton) as he doesn't have either.

I love this forum and the help I've received here has been fantastic. Keep up the great work.

Hi Gem, no problem at all.

I think he will find the information useful when you forward to it.
Unfortunately you will need to reinstall an antivirus as at the moment there is no protection - you are right in saying that Windows Defender is not an antivirus, which it isn't; it is an antispyware and will not fully protect your computer from the malware out there as an antivirus would.

You need to install an antivirus program as soon as you can and run a complete scan of the computer.
AVG and Avast are excellent, free antivirus programs..
Never install more than one antivirus on your system - several together can cause problems and decrease performance.

The ones above are free, but if you are willing to splash out I would recommend Kaspersky!
The Hijackthis log was more or less clean apart from that entry, but let me know if there are any advances there.
