Hi BC,

About a week back, my computer crashed with a BSOD. However, there were no other specifics. At that time, I had almost 30-35 tabs open on Chrome as I was doing research for my thesis.

I decided to then just make sure I don't open too many tabs and everything seemed fine after that.

Today, another BSOD happened and this time, with the aforementioned error "system thread exception not handled (bckd sys)".

I'm really not sure what could be triggering this. The only change I've made to my computer over the last two weeks is that I recently installed K9 Bluecoat Web Protection.

I did a fair bit of searching online, but each forum or article seems to indicate a different root cause, so I'm wary of following the solutions provided, given that I may not have the same root problem.

Computer details:

Model: Samsung NP370R4E

Windows 8.1, 64-bit

Intel ® Pentium ® CPU 997 @ 1.60GHz

4GB RAM

Also, here is the last two events from the event log (I'm not sure if it will help identify the problem, but just thought I'd throw it in):

Please run this report collecting tool so that we can provide a complete analysis:  http://omgdebugging.com/bsod-inspector/
When done a Notepad document will open with the name of the file and it's location. (By default it'll be a .zip file located on your Desktop)
Simply upload the .zip file with your next post and we'll move on from there.

Unfortunately it appears that the system has pirated software.
Please get a legitimate copy installed and we'll be glad to help.

Here's suggestions on how to ensure that your version is legitimate:  http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/genuine

Please be aware that we may not be able to fix it (as the hacks that were done to activate it will cause the OS to behave differently than we expect it to). If that's the case, our efforts to help may just waste your time. Secondly, the forum rules prohibit assisting with pirated software - so the topic would be closed if that is the case.

As a courtesy, I will offer an analysis of your issues using the reports you provided.
I will not answer any questions about the analysis until the system is made legitimate.
If you do make it legitimate, please submit a new set of reports for us to check.

The only change I've made to my computer over the last two weeks is that I recently installed K9 Bluecoat Web Protection.

That's likely to be it (bckd sys is a driver component of K9)

Uninstall it and see if the BSOD's go away.

Your UEFI/BIOS dates from 2014.  Please check at the manufacturer's website to see if there are any UEFI/BIOS updates available for your system.  If you are able to install the update through Windows (without booting from an external drive), then go ahead and update it.  WARNING - if the computer might shut down during this procedure, please don't do it, as this may physically damage the computer and prevent it from booting.

Please double check for any new Windows Updates.  It only takes one update to cause a problem, so it's essential that you have all of them.

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

Thank you very much for being courteous enough to provide an analysis.

However, I would like to clarify that to my knowledge, until you pointed it out, I was unaware that I was using a pirated copy of Windows. In fact, I am still wondering how that is possible. This laptop is second hand, but I was guaranteed the Windows was genuine. It even has a sticker on the back of the laptop (picture attached).

At time of typing this, I do not see any other way around this. If my copy of Windows is truly counterfeit, I do not have the means to purchase a legitimate copy as the price for one in my country is about half of what I make in a month working part time as a student.

Would you have suggestions for any other alternatives in terms of legitimate software?

Either way, thank you once again for your time and effort.

I understand that you might not be aware of this - we see this quite often in the online forums.

The easiest/cheapest way to fix this would be to purchase recovery media from the laptop manufacturer.

I'm not familiar with Samsung's charges - but normally they are much less than a retail copy of Windows would cost.

Beyond that, the only other alternative would be a free operating system such as Linux.

Good luck to you!
