Hi!

So I'm running Windows 7 on a Asus K53E with a 64 bit operating system and 4GB of RAM. I've had it for close to 5 years and can't really afford to get a new one at the moment.

Right now I'm having an issue where the laptop isn't running as smooth as I feel that it could. It's really noticeable when I stream any audio (or especially) video content anywhere online, something I do all of the time. The audio will stutter and glitch (creating kind of a dub-step sound effect). It's been happening for months, though it used to only happen if it wasn't plugged in, or if it'd been on for too long etc. Now it happens very frequently (sometimes once every other minute if not more) and nothing I've tried (updating the audio drivers and taking better care of it in general) has helped.

I haven't really been able to find much help online, though last night I downloaded a latency checker and saw repeated huge spikes in latency while streaming soccer matches and content from Netflix. I tried disabling and re-enabling various devices as the program recommended, but haven't been able to isolate any potentially faulty drivers. What was interesting however, is that I realized that these latency spikes weren't just occurring while content was streaming, but as I preformed other functions on my computer as well (mostly answering emails for my job). The whole system runs pretty laggy in general, I'm realizing now. Is there anything I can do?

I'm really out of ideas and would appreciate the hell out of any help anyone could offer.

Thank you so much in advance.

Do you have the option of doing a factory reset if you have licenses to all your installed programs including Office? I don't see any security software listed that may be causing the latency issue. There are a lot of programs in your list I would uninstall including Bonjour. You Adobe Flash programs are out of date and pose a security risk. Do you use Windows Live Mesh Active X?

You have

Office 2010

Office XP Pro with Frontpage

Office Starter.

Do you need each of these versions?

If you still have the recovery partition, you would be able to do a factory reset by tapping F9 at boot but that option is up to you. How does the computer run in safe mode? I would at least run TFC to remove your temp files from the computer. Type Msconfig in the search box and run. How many startup items are you running?

Hi,

Truthfully I don't use any of those Office programs since I use either Google Drive or Celtx for any of the word processing work I have to do, so I'm not that concerned with the licences. Should I uninstall any of those Office programs?

I don't know that I do use Windows Live Mesh Active X. I've just uninstalled Bonjour. There are actually only 1 start-up program I'm running (there's only one box checked under startup item tab). I've removed the temp files. It runs fine in safe mode from what I remember.

I could be open to doing a factory reset. What specifically will I lose (and potentially have to re-install) in doing so?

When you do a factory reset you lose everything that was installed after factory purchase so you would need to reinstall any of those programs and backup your personal data such as bookmarks to an external source. From your speccy it looks like you have you recovery partition intact.

I would uninstall all of the Office Programs if you do not use them. I would also remove any program that is not absolutely necessary for running your computer. In the installed programs list how many do you actually use.

Java is also out of date and I would remove it.

Edit: If you do have the Office Licenses you can back them up and your Windows activation too with Advanced Token Manager. The files are backed up to the folder you unzipped the file to. I would copy the folder to a USB flash drive after backup.

Do you use the following, If not I would consider uninstalling them.

Control ActiveX de Windows Live Mesh para conexiones remotas (HKLM-x32\...\{04668DF2-D32F-4555-9C7E-35523DCD6544}) (Version: 15.4.5722.2 - Microsoft Corporation)

I would also create a restore point and run ADWcleaner. Do not clean but post the scan results.

Hello,

So I uninstalled pretty much all of those programs that you listed. It's actually running quite a bit better. I'm going to see how it runs for the next day or so and go from there. It would be awesome if this worked! Thanks. Here's the AdwCleaner scan results (from the notepad file):

No, I don't think the OP's system is infected. Speccy reveals a number of "interesting" things.

- I am not surprised your system is slow. You've got a relatively small harddisk (115 GB, not much for a Win 7 system ( I have 500 GBs)) and the disk is for 85% full. Using (streaming) video also puts an extra burden on your system.

- Run the build-in disk clean up tool and choose the option "clean system files" as well. That could/will free up GBs (!!!) of diskspace.

- Remove the content of "C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download". Can contain GBs of obsolete files as well.

- Memory usage is quite high (75%). Install PcWinTech's Cleanmem. It reduces memory usage every 15 minutes and that speeds up overall system performance.

- Browsers can be configured to delete all the files that were stored temporarily on your harddisk.

- Regularly run the build-in "Disk Defragmentation" program (e.g. every week or month)

Now suggestions that cost money:

- Increase the memory to 8 GB. (Chrome uses A LOT OF memory)

- Buy a larger Hard disk (say 500 GB) but then you also need the Original installation disk of Windows 7 Home Premium and a valid licence key.

Go ahead and clean the items found by Adwcleaner. For a faster browser experience on Chrome I would install the following extensions.

Ghostery; Enable everything except Widgets in Options

Adguard

The following can take the place of both. Adguard is a little more granular as it will let you block specific ads on a page.

ublock origin

Also if you do not use the Video Converters uninstall those.

Flvto Converter (HKLM-x32\...\Flvto Converter) (Version: 0.3.0 - Hotger)

Boilsoft Video Converter 3.01 (HKLM-x32\...\{4822DF0D-087B-435C-843D-ADAB239CCA13}_is1) (Version:  - Boilsoft. Inc.)

BitLord 2.3 (HKLM-x32\...\BitLord) (Version: 2.3.2-239 - House of Life)  Because this was found by Adwcleaner as a PUP

And following the good suggestions by Willy22 will help. I just want to note that by default Windows 7 Disk Defragmentation is automatically done via the Task Scheduler every Wednesday.

Thanks to you both for all of the suggestions. I def have cleared a lot of GB of crap off of this machine. Question: if Chrome takes up so much space, would it be beneficial for me to have it installed on my D drive instead of my C? There's a ton of space on there. Would this affect my system performance at all? Sorry if it's a dumb question. You've all been a big help.

I did notice you did not have much free space left on C: in your Minitoolbox log.

You can try installing to D: and see how Chrome runs

Personally I would do the following. If you have an external hard drive create a complete disk image using Macrium Reflect Free. Create a bootable disk using Macrium. Macrium will let you restore the image in case your computer no longer boots to Windows or you need to replace the hard drive. This would get you back in minutes versus hours especially if the hard drive fails and you have no Windows install disk. If you do not have a external drive then backup your important data.

Use Partition Wizard to shrink the D: Partition and expand the C: Partition. From your Minitools log it looks like you could easily add 100GB to your C: partition. If you are interested in doing this then I can post more detailed instructions.

- I personally would move all data from the D: drive to a USB external drive (also good for making regular backups) and use the build-in (in Win 7) disk resizing program to kill the D: drive (of ~ 320 GB) and add those 320 GB to the C: drive. Then you have one drive of ~ 450 GB. That re-sizing program is "buried" rather deep in Windows and that's for a GOOD reason. It's not that user friendly and you should take your time, don't rush it.

- Correction. I should have written:

"- Browsers can be configured to delete all the files these browsers stored temporarily on your harddisk when the user closes that browser".

OK, so I've been thinking this over for a couple of days (sorry for the radio silence on my end). I am interested in doing a re-partition, but I have a couple of concerns. 1) Will this fix the performance issue? In the past couple of days at startup I've been getting this message that one of drives needs to be checked for consistency. I let it run once, nothing really came of it. I'm not sure if I deleted something a bit more critical when I was clearing things out or if there's some sort of deep error somewhere. If I re-partition and clear everything out, should this clear up the issues I'm having? 2) Could I have step-by-step instructions on what to do? I'm afraid of messing things up further. Thanks again for your help.

I re-read your first post and it's clear that your HD has been filling up bit by bit. I am not surprised because Win 7 was installed back in 2011.

Priority # 1 is to increase the amount of free disk space on drive C:.

- Run the build-in clean up tool as described above.

- Use Piriform's CCleaner to delete:

    - the browser's temporary files.

    - System Restore Points.

    - the folder "C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download".

    - Whatever more CCleaner recommends.

(These are very reliable tools !!!!)

What does Speccy say the % and amount of free space on the C: drive is after this ?

Step 2:

Make a backup of ALL files on your D: drive. E.g. to an external USB drive (perhaps a friend/colleague can help ?). (You SHOULD regularly make a backup of all your files any way !!!).

(more steps will follow)
