Hoping I can post this before it happens again! Ever since this past Saturday morning after a "critical update" my computer has been awful. It is hanging (according to MS definition) for no reason at all. I thought it was Chrome related (I'm on FF right now) so I updated Chrome and did a RealTek driver thing I read about but still no luck. I did a system restore to before the update but it hasn't seemed to help either. This is driving me crazy; of course it happens just after I start school. Please let me know what I need to provide as far as logs etc. Will get them done as best I can in between hangs.

Thank you!

Let's try looking at these reports:

1)  Please run this report collecting tool (even though you may not be reporting BSOD's) so we can provide a complete analysis:  http://omgdebugging.com/bsod-inspector/
When done a Notepad document will open with the name of the file and it's location.
By default it'll be a .zip file located on your Desktop
Simply upload the .zip file with your next post and we'll move on from there.

2)  Please do the following:
- open Event Viewer (run eventvwr.msc from the "Run" dialog)
- expand the Custom Views category (left click on the > next to the words "Custom Views")
- right click on the "Administrative Events" heading
- select "Save all Events in Custom View as..."
- save the file as Admin.evtx
- zip up the file (right click on it, select "Send to", select "Compressed (zipped) folder")
- upload it with your next post (if it's too big, then upload it to a free file-hosting service and post a link here).

FYI - If we're looking for Event ID 41 errors (unexplained shutdowns), there's more info on that here:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2028504

While waiting for a reply, please monitor your temps with this free utility:  http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html

Thank you!

I'm doing this pretty much one at a time. I'm in Safe Mode right now. The computer ran last night after it's umpteenth restart for at least 4 hours, with no program open. I'm not sure when it stopped responding and I woke up to a gray screen.Attached File  TJ_PC_1_25_2016_7_49_39_AM.zip   4.24MB   1 downloads

I wondered about that but I don't know.

And I just found out my sound is screwed, probably from that RealTek driver thing I tried last night. Go me!

It has been running in Safe Mode all day, since my reply at 7:57 AM. I've used Firefox and Chrome. No issues that I can tell (I was gone from 8:45 AM - 3:15 PM).

Still running in Safe Mode at 5:47 PM. I have been using it for about 2.5 hours on various sites in both FF and Chrome.

Lot's of these errors in the Admin logfile:

The Computer Browser service depends on the Server service which failed to start because of the following error:
The dependency service or group failed to start.

Uncertain if they're related to your issues though.

Are you monitoring the temps as I suggested?  If so, what are you seeing for temps?

Safe Mode loads minimal 3rd party drivers and programs (and stops some Microsoft stuff from loading also).
This is a good indicator that it's likely a software problem.

To further troubleshoot this, try a clean boot:  http://www.thewindowsclub.com/what-is-clean-boot-state-in-windows

If the system keeps on working, then you can re-enable things in small groups so you can figure out what is causing it.

But before doing that, please follow the suggestions that follow:

No Windows Update hotfixes installed after SP1.  Most systems with SP1 have 350 or more.  Please visit Windows Update and get ALL available updates (it may take several trips to get them all).

Lot's of Windows Update failures in the WER section of the MSINFO32 report.  If unable to fix this, please post back for further suggestions.

This device has problems in Device Manger:

Security Processor Loader Driver    ROOT\LEGACY_SPLDR\0000    This device is not present, is not working properly, or does not have all its drivers installed.

This error is most likely due to the missing Windows Updates.  Please get ALL of the updates ASAP.

OK. This may take some time as I have to work today, but will start on it in the afternoon.

I looked at temps once yesterday afternoon, they read 91*; currently 87* after sitting on all night not in use.

Thank you again.

Are the temps Fahrenheit or Celsius?

91ºF is OK, 91ºC is not

Farenheit

I did all the updates I think, and throughout the update process while I was at work yesterday, it was restarted a couple times and stayed on without freezing. The updating did not go entirely smoothly, as it would give messages like "9 updates failed, 1 installed successfully". I used it when I came home for about 3 hours straight with no problem.

I was doing the updates in batches, and the last time before I went to bed it said 20/20 successfully installed, everything seemed happy. When I got up this morning, it was non-responsive again and I had to restart. I'm in Safe Mode now.

I am going to restart and see if there are any missing updates. Then I will do a clean boot as you said above.

I just restarted in normal mode. One thing I noticed immediately is that it was slow to start again. The past few times I rebooted it went from the Welcome screen to my desktop within seconds. Prior to that (when it was freezing) it took about 4 minutes to get from the Welcome screen to my desktop, and longer yet for everything to fully load. It was on the quick loads that things were working. I suspect I will freeze here at some point again.

It says I have 70 updates left to install so am trying to get that done.

A good number of the updates are failing. Don't know what to do about that.

Still working on installing updates. Like I said up above, a good many of them didn't install when they said they were, so I am doing them in batches.

When I look at the list of installed updates, I'd say about 1/6 in the long list are showing as "failed". Is there a way to rectify that?
