Hello everyone, This is my first time posting since I am new to this forum.

I have a Dell Windows xp computer.

I would like to know if there is any way to make it run faster?

Anything I should do ?

Anything I should install?

Thank you,

Eileen

Running two antivirus programs on the same computer will definitely make it slow. You should remove one. Never install more than one antivirus on a computer, even if there's only "one" running.

Furthermore, 1 GB of RAM for XP is now on the low side. 2GB would definitely be more appropriate.

I deleted one anti-virus. But I only put the one on after the pc was running slow.

I thought that the other one would make it run better.

How would I get another GB of Ram?

You have 4 memory slots. 2 already used and 2 free ones where you can install more RAM modules.

Are there any programs I should use to help me keep it running smooth?

Or any settings I should use?

A good Anntivirus program like Avira or Avast and Malwarebytes for detecting and removing malware

- Memory usage is very high (> 70%). Install PcWinTech's Cleanmem. It reduces memory usage every 15 minutes and let it collapse the file cache as well.

- Remove one anti virus program.

- The combination of 1 GB of memory and using Chrome is a good recipe for a slow system. I certainly would add more memory or remove Chrome and use Internet Explorer.

- Besides that there's isn't too much you can do speed up that XP system. Perhaps it's better to buy a computer with a newer windows Operating system. E.g a second hand refurbished Windows 7 system. But I don't know what you can and want to spend on a new system.

Hello!

I have an older Windows Vista laptop at home that was extremely slow and I went through the suggestions in this article and it really made a big difference:

http://www.wikihow.com/Speed-Up-a-Slow-Windows-Computer-for-Free

They're all pretty easy to do and you don't have to install anything. The keys, in my opinion, were trimming down my startup programs and cutting down on cosmetic features that I honestly don't even notice are gone...other than my computer running way faster!

Best,
Haruki

Thank-You all, for all your help with my computer.

Unfortunately, at this time I, can't afford any memory or a new computer.

I would like a rebuilt Windows 7, in the near future, if money permits.

Right now I would just like to try and keep this computer running as long as possible.

Making changes, to try and make it run a little better.
