Last Mondat I downloaded a VM. I got it at virtualbox.com. I am having a problem with the VM. I tried for Windows 98. But there is a message up there.
It says.
":Fatal; No bootable medium found! System halted."

Was I suppose to download something else? I want to know what I did wrong.

My computer is a a Dell Inspiron 530 desktop computer. With Windows Vista. 32 bit.

Well, do you have an .iso for Windows 98? VirtualBox only offers you the possibility to create virtual machines, it doesn't provide the installation source (.iso) for the OS you want to install.

No. All I did was to download VM from that website. Where do I get the .iso?

You buy it, of course.  Here's one on Amazon you may be interested in.  You would probably find a copy on eBay for a lot cheaper if you look around.

I may have to go with Xp. I have that on a CD. Here is what is on the CD.

"Operating System"

Reinstallation CD

Xp home edition. Including Service Pack 1a.

Is that the right CD?

I wish I could download Windows 98.

From the info you provided I'd say it looks like an XP disk.  Easiest way to tell is to run it.  I'd assume you also have the product key to go with the disk.

It says D/PN, and 5 numbers, and the letter D.  Below the barcode it has DS/N, and a bunch of numbers. That is on the clear case that the CD is in.Would that be it? If so, I will run it tomorrow.

The license number is 25 characters long and is usually noted in groups of 5, e.g. xxxxx - xxxxx - xxxxx - xxxxx - xxxxx.

I couldn't find it on the pack. But I did find it on the bottom of a Dell laptop. It has Windows Xp. Can I use that number? If not, I will look on the old desk to. Its in one of the rooms.

No.  You cannot use the same key on two machines even though one is really a virtual machine.

But the CD came with the old computer. I still can't use that?

Did it come pre-installed or was it a retail CD?  If it was pre-installed (even if it was on an old machine that is no longer working) then NO.  If it's a retail disk (with a retail key) then YES.

It is a reinstallation disk. I haven't used the computer in years. So it should be like reinstalling the computer. The one laptop I have has Linux on it. After I get the VM set up, I plan to use it on tech support scammers. I have fun talking to them.

Would the machine (even if it is virtual) have the same motherboard?  OEM versions of Windows are tied to the motherboard so they can only be used or reinstalled on that machine.  If the machine is dead for whatever reason then the OS it came with cannot be re-used on another machine.

I got my VM set up. I used the CD. There is also a free download. But I couldn't get it to work. It will last for about 30 days. But I might delete it, and put up another one before then.

Here is the link to the free download.
