Can I have Windows XP and Ubuntu both on my PC and select  which OS to run ? Open with XP and select Ubuntu when required.

If so, does Ubuntu appear as a desktop icon to select when needed ?

No, Ubuntu will have its own entry when you boot into your machine. Remember this is a entire os and not just a .exe
