So my husband's computer won't turn on. He plays games like America's Army, and has been having some issues recently. First it was crashing and giving him the BSOD when he tried to play. Then he wiped everything, reinstalled the OS and it was ok for a while. The last couple days he'd be in the middle of playing and he'd get a blank blue screen and the computer would shut off. It always booted up again, though.

Just now the screen went gray (it was on, but blank) and made a weird whirring noise. So he shut it off and tried to boot up again. But now it doesn't boot up. It turns on, the fans go, and the screen comes on. It shows the ASUS logo, then a windows thing comes up saying there's an error and it will try to restore to a previous version... then the ASUS logo again and a blank screen.

Can't actually get any files off of it that might help you guys... but this is the computer: http://www.asus.com/Tower-PCs/CG8270/
Still running windows 8 as far as I know. Never upgraded to 8.1, even.

Let's try looking at these reports:

1)  Please run this report collecting tool (even though you may not be reporting BSOD's) so we can provide a complete analysis:  http://omgdebugging.com/bsod-inspector/
When done a Notepad document will open with the name of the file and it's location.
By default it'll be a .zip file located on your Desktop
Simply upload the .zip file with your next post and we'll move on from there.

2)  Please do the following:
- open Event Viewer (run eventvwr.msc from the "Run" dialog)
- expand the Custom Views category (left click on the > next to the words "Custom Views")
- right click on the "Administrative Events" heading
- select "Save all Events in Custom View as..."
- save the file as Admin.evtx
- zip up the file (right click on it, select "Send to", select "Compressed (zipped) folder")
- upload it with your next post (if it's too big, then upload it to a free file-hosting service and post a link here).

FYI - If we're looking for Event ID 41 errors (unexplained shutdowns), there's more info on that here:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2028504

While waiting for a reply, please monitor your temps with this free utility:  http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html

I can't run any reports. The computer won't turn on. As I said in my post.

My husband tried doing a full reset, in hopes that it would boot up long enough to get more info. It did the reset, or at least it said it was resetting and counted from 0% to 100%, but then wouldn't boot. Showed the asus logo again and then went back to a blank screen.

My mistake, I focused on the symptoms about crashing and BSOD's.

That's what I get for rushing through posts while being late for work and texting with my brother..

Sorry!

Since the Reset failed, I'd suggest these free, bootable hardware diagnostics:  http://www.carrona.org/initdiag.html

To do this with a W8 system, you may have to boot to legacy/compatibility mode.

For advice on that, please post over in the Internal Hardware forums:    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/f/7/internal-hardware/

FYI - the MemTest86 test (not the MemTest86+ test) is bootable in UEFI - so you can run that test without switching to compatibility mode.
