Since a few days, there are A LOT of computers that are experiencing a problem with Windows Update. When booting the computer, a screen with the following appears: "Failure configuring Windows Updates. Reverting changes. Do not turn off your computer.". For some people, the problem is fixed is 10 minutes, but in general it takes 30minutes to an hour! We have cases of people that needed to wait for more then 3 hours.

When booted, you can see that some updates are failed. Last week, we thought that it was KB2952664, but today we see that the problem has returned at computers where the update is hidden or already installed.

Is anybody seeing the problem and does anybody has a fix?

It literally happening to more then 15 of our clients and i've seen it on more then 30 computers.

Disabling Windows Update seems the only fix at the moment.

Kaz20,

I've 'fixed' it on multiple computers by disabling the following updates: KB3121212 & KB2952664. After installing the other updates, these 2 updates can be installed without a problem.

The only thing that these computers have in common is an N-Able Agent (N-Central) and Trend Micro, I don't know if that has something to do with it.

Thank you

Easy fix

Stop Windows Update Service

Delete contents of c:\windows\software distribution\downloads

Start Windows Update Service

Manually go out and check for updates, do not install what it says is there

Install the updates

Got another computer 10 minutes ago, the only thing in common: Trend Micro.

I'm pretty sure trend is the culprit. I Haven't tried disabling/uninstalling trend yet.

There is no such a issue all Windows updates usually installs without any issue disable Trend Micro program as it could be corrupting Windows update downloads.

Yeah, indeed. After a while they get through. Still very annoying because the user doesn't like to wait in the morning.

Did you try disabling Trend Micro?
