Hello everybody.

I have been struck by a curious problem. From time to time, my monitor will occasionally freeze, and gradually lighten up until infinity. At times horizontal and vertical lines in white, red, green, pink will appear. I have made some observations, though. A little flick, or just rocking the monitor back and forth will revert the screen and uplift the freeze. It also goes the other way, slight movement of the screen may also cause the freezing. These freezing tendencies are apparently completly random, and have significantly increased the last several months.

However, I am not very knowledgable about hardware in computers, and in general not in computers at all, to be honest. I suspect that there isn't more into it than a simple component replacement to solve this problem.

It would be nice to know exactly what to replace, though.  What could be the possible causes for this?

Hello simonpaa and :welcome:

Since you state your hardware skills are limited, the best advice would be not to try anything on your own. This reasonably leaves you with the possibility of placing the laptop in the hands of a qualified computer technician. However, that leads to a question of economics as the limited budget priced Dell Inspiron 1545 could be at, or approaching, seven (7) years in age and simply not worth the outlay for a repair.

Yet if you have access to an external monitor, that can accept the laptop's VGA output, you may be able to bypass the problem while simultaneously further establishing the source of the video trouble while deciding the economics of a suitable replacement having greater speed and future capabilities.

I am willing to do some research and learn some basic skills. I've got time, patience and money for that, even if it all fails in the end. :) Would be a perfect opportunity to learn a lot.

Any further ideas? What could be causing the distorsions?

That laptop originally came with Vista installed on it.  If it still has Vista installed or you have upgraded to Windows 7 boot into Safe Mode to see if the problem persists.

To boot into Safe Mode do the following.

With the computer shut down press the power button and immediately start tapping the F8 key.  Continue to do this until the Advanced Boot Options opens.  Use the up or down key to navigate to the Safe Mode option, press Enter to select this option.

If the problem does not persist in Safe Mode there is a good chance that this is a graphics driver issue.

Please download and install Speccy to provide us with information about your computer.  Clicking on this link will automatically initiate the download.

This is a Zip file, you will need a program like 7-Zip to extract the program.

When you have downloaded the Speccy Snapshot you will need to extract the program.  In order to do this click on Extract all as seen in the image below.

speccy_zpst7spbukh.png

After extracting the program you will be prompted to Select a Destination and Extract Files.  You can change the location suggested or choose another location.  After you have decided on the location click on Extract.

In the page that opens you will see two Applications.  The first is for a 32-bit operating system, the second is for a 64-bit operating system.  Click on the version which applies to your operating system.  This will open the Speccy Snapshot.

When Speccy opens you will see a screen similar to the one below.

speccy9_zps2d9cdedc.png

Click on File which is outlined in red in the screen above, and then click on Publish Snapshot.

The following screen will appear, click on Yes.

The following screen will appear, click on Copy to Clipboard.

In your next post right click inside the Reply to Topic box, then click on Paste.  This will load a link to the Speccy log.

Same freezing phenomenon occurs in Safe Mode.

Here is the log.

My first thought was that this could be a graphics driver causing this.  Safe Mode uses a native Windows graphics driver which would work without any problems if this were a graphics driver issue.

Do you have access to an external monitor to see if the problem is with your display?

Please download MiniToolBox to your desktop.

Right-click on MiniToolBox.exe and select Run as Administrator.

You will see an image like the one below.

minitoolbox_zps7byuwkla.png

Click on the following checkboxes only:

• List last 10 Event Viewer log
• List Installed Programs
• List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
• List Minidump Files

Click on Go to start the scan.  Once it is finished highlight the text, then copy it and paste it in your topic.

Family and loved ones will always be a priority in my daily life.  You never know when one will leave you.

No such opportunity right now, I'm afraid. Hopefully I will be able to try the external monitor next week, though.

Some of the information is sadly in Swedish, as you will notice. Just ask if it presents a problem.

Please uninstall Security Task Manager.  This software may be corrupted.

After it has been uninstalled run the MiniToolBox again, but only click on  List last 10 Event Viewer log.

I'd like to share an experience on my son's Dell Inspiron 1545 Vista laptop in which he had the same problem about 3 years ago. The same issues that you mentioned were happening and the procedures you mentioned were randomly helpful. I don't recall the exact name of the component but I was going to replace the "backlight inverter" which is located in the "base" of the laptop just below the display panel. But what I found out was that when I tapped that area with my knuckles the display returned to normal: however, it wasn't immediately always successful. I was going to replace or reset the "backlight inverter" but my son decided to do what I had done. After about 3 weeks all of a sudden the display was fine and has been since then. When I said reset, it's because it worked for me once on a friends laptop.

I know you are already receiving expert advice so I would consider staying on course in that direction without mixing up troubleshooting procedures. I just wanted to include the experience my son went through in case it's helpful later on.

Very helpful, indeed. I've done som research, and it may be a possible cause. Some of the characteristic "symptoms" are very accurately described over the Internet, and have been experienced on my laptop. The inverter may be the culprit.

Click on the Start orb rsz_1rsz_1rsz_start_orb_zpshjewtibd.png, then type services in the Search programs and files box.

Services will appear in the results above the search box, right click on it and select Run as administrator.

When Services opens scroll down to Network Location Awareness.  Make sure that the Status is Running, and make sure the Startup Type is set to Automatic.

If the service isn't running double click on the service.  Under Startup type select Manual from the menu.  Under Service status: click on Run.

Run the same MiniToolBox selection again to make sure the error below does not appear.

I've tried reloading it after making sure the services were enabled. However, it doesn't seem to make any difference on the log. Any suggestions?

What exactly do you mean by "I've tried reloading it"?

Reopen Services and see if the Network Location Awareness is still running.
