I have a Windows 7 machine that is very lightly loaded, it's main task in life is for my wife to play MahJongg on it with me using it for a very little web browsing and driving the printer.

But when I boot it the disk goes crazy working it's clacker off for about a half an hour. The disk is working so hard that it slows everything down even using the file explorer is a click now and come back later sort of delay?

So my question is what is the disk doing and how can I stop it doing whatever its doing?

I actually posted this problem before Christmas but then the power supply in the computer died and with the Christmas New Year break it seems to have been lost so I am posting it again.  Louis asked for the below info:

Minimum RAM for 64-bit version (2GB), while you have one svchost process with a max usage of 1.17GB.  Figure that the AV program is going to take another 350 or so GB, add in your browsers...you don't have enough RAM installed for Windows to be efficient.  Add in the fact that you have Libre Office installed and you an older system...you are asking a lot of a system that I don't think that it can deliver.

IE 8 installed, no security updates reflected for last 5 months or before Aug 2015.

Download/install IE11, please.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/Internet-Explorer-11-for-Windows-7-details.aspx

Please...run the chkdsk /r command first...then follow that with the sfc /scannow command.

Chkdsk Command, Windows 7, Aura - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/582646/cyclic-redundancy-error/?p=3759189

Run sfc scannow command prompt, Aura - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/579699/missing-uxthemedll-file/?p=3736491

Then...wait a day or so and follow the instructions for posting new MTB data, following the instructions I previously.  Do not check anything I did not request.  Post a new Speccy Snapshot link then also :).

Click on the Start orb rsz_1rsz_1rsz_start_orb_zpshjewtibd.png, then type cmd in the Search programs and files box.

cmd will appear in the results above the search box.  Right click on it and select Run as administrator.  This will open the Elevated Command Prompt.

When the Command Prompt opens copy and paste the command below in the command prompt, then press Enter.

lodctr /r

This addresses the following error.

Error: (12/21/2015 03:42:09 PM) (Source: Microsoft-Windows-LoadPerf) (User: NT AUTHORITY)

Description: The performance strings in the Performance registry value is corrupted when process Performance extension counter provider. The BaseIndex value from the Performance registry is the first DWORD in the Data section, LastCounter value is the second DWORD in the Data section, and LastHelp value is the third DWORD in the Data section.

The lodctr /r command will overwrite all Performance counter registry settings and Explain text replacing them.

If you have already done this, is the computer running better?

Hi -

Only to follow up with what dc3 and hamluis have been saying

From your Speccy -

RAM: Memory slots: Total memory slots: 4
Used memory slots: 2
Free memory slots: 2

Physical Memory:Memory Usage: 91 %
Total Physical: 2.00 GB
Available Physical: 165 MB

My repair, after I checked all installed files; double your memory (basically) after a quick trip to your local computer store.

Purchase 2 x Type: DDR2 RAM sticks.

Size: 1024 MBytes
Manufacturer: Kingston
Max Bandwidth: PC2-5300 (333 MHz)
Part Number: 9905316-005.A04LF
Serial Number: 2569737076

Currently about US$50 each from most retailers ........or 1 at a time ..... But I always install them in pairs.
And yes, I do know we can't all afford extra costs at this time of the year, but please bookmark this post for yourself.

Thank You -

What were the results of the chkdsk? 2GB RAM is fine for light use, unless you are playing games or doing CAD, video editing etc. I used to play a demanding 3D game with 2GB RAM (and a dedicated graphics card)

Try a clean boot and then check available RAM and see how performance is after.

I have some dead computers here can I remove the RAM from one of them and put it in this computer?

I can't agree with Adam Pollard.  He is correct that you can run Windows 7 on 2GB of RAM, but it is painfully slow.  The least I would install would be 3GB of RAM, but with the modules available this would mean that you wouldn't be running the RAM in dual channel.

Your motherboard is capable of running in dual channel.  This decreases the throughput time of the RAM effectively making it twice as fast.  The modules used must have the exact same specifications.  The two modules you have install are a matched pair, so they are running in dual channel.

Here are the specifications of the two modules you have installed:

Manufacturer  Kingston

Part Number   9905316-005.A04LF
Size  1Gb Module
Type  DIMM Chip
Type  DDR2
Speed  PC2-5300 667MHz
Error Checking
Non-ECC
Registered  Unregistered
CAS LatencyCL5

Rank  Dual-rank (Dual Channel)

Your motherboard has 4 RAM slots and has a maximum limit of 8GB of RAM, this means 2GB per slot.

Ram comes in many different configurations.  The number of pins, its speed, buffered or unbuffered, DDR, DDR2, DDR3, etc.

You can Google the "dead" computer for their specification to see if any of the modules compatible.  But the modules (all four) must have identical specifications or they will not run in dual channel.

Family and loved ones will always be a priority in my daily life.  You never know when one will leave you.

Not sure if the Original Poster is still with us, but I must agree with dc3.

I posted mine as "My repair, after I checked all installed files" and still believe that this is the only current "repair" available.

Note also posted was "Currently about US$50 each from most retailers ........or 1 at a time ..... But I always install them in pairs.

And yes, I do know we can't all afford extra costs at this time of the year, but please bookmark this post for yourself.

Purchase 2 x Type: DDR2 RAM sticks.

Size: 1024 MBytes
Manufacturer: Kingston
Max Bandwidth: PC2-5300 (333 MHz)
Part Number: 9905316-005.A04LF
Serial Number: 2569737076" ......... And the highlighted items are what dc3 refers to.

People do purchase these Notebooks and think they have a fully installed laptop, but it is a Notebook in its current form, and will stay like that unless altered.

I hope the Original Poster (gurkle) has not gone away thinking that we are picking on them, but will understand that we are trying to help them.

Thanks -

Yes I am still here and trying to get some RAM ....

But I do wonder if lack of RAM is the problem because that computer is very lightly loaded, 90% of the time my wife uses it to play maj jongg but as soon as it's booted the disk works really, really hard for about a half an hour then goes quiet.

I'm a computer "lightweight" entering into a discussion with "heavyweights" but I was wondering if you are running anti-virus and anti-malware, and if you have run any utilities to clean up "junk" programs that might be slowing your machine down.
