A few days ago I began to suspect that my laptop was infected as my google.com got redirected to google.co.il

At first I thought it was google's issue, based on what others have said, although it did not quite make sense as google.co.il could detect my IP address and it clearly showed that I was in New York, USA, not Israel.

Today, even when I was trying to read articles on bleeping computer.com, from time to time, my click would get redirected to random sites not on bleeping computer.

Furthermore, recently I began to notice that when using google search, on Chrome ONLY but not on Firefox, I always got a list of ad on the very top of my search list, with a sign next to those ad's "Search Enhanced Results by not set".

The problem is, when I ran malwarebytes antimalware and panda antivirus scan. Both scans turned up nothing.

I uninstalled Chrome and re-installed a new version but now Chrome runs super slow and the "Search Enhanced Results" thing still shows up at the top of my google search.

Need some help. Thanks.

p22002970.gif Please download Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) to your desktop.
There are 2 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.

rKill.exe: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/10/
iExplore.exe (renamed rKill.exe): http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/11/

  • Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
  • If using Windows Vista, 7 or 8 right-click on it and choose Run As Administrator.
  • A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
  • If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
  • Do not reboot until instructed.
  • If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.

If normal mode still doesn't work, run the tool from safe mode.

When the scan is done Notepad will open with rKill log.
Post it in your next reply.

NOTE. rKill.txt log will also be present on your desktop.

NOTE Do NOT wrap your logs in "quote" or "code" brackets.
Do NOT use spoilers.
Do NOT edit your reply to post additional logs. Create new reply. I'll not get any email notifications about edits so I won't know you posted something new.

First off, thank you very much for the response. I will post all requested info later.

Three things I would like to mention before I post the scanned output -

(a) all browsers were affected by this "israel google thing" (google.co.il). I've since uninstalled chrome and firefox (but cannot remove IE as it's an integral part of microsoft), removed respective folders in %APPDATA%, but the google.co.il is still there (as seen in IE). (no redirect observed yet).

(B) there was NO reboot required after I finished running MBAM. Not sure if this is a bad sign or not.

© starting and shutting-off computer is becoming more and more sluggish.

Please let me know if you should find anything in any of the logs below or if I should run (or re-run) any programs. Again, great many thanks for your time.

Update: the "google" issue persists. As I cannot remove IE, I now use IE to gain access to the internet. On IE, when I type google.com, it goes directly to google.co.il (Google-israel) and all banners on the page go Hebrew. I have to choose "use Google.com" to force my use of google.com as a domain. Seems that the problem remains, despite all scans.

Thank you very much for the help.

1. After TFC and AdwCleaner - AdwCleaner did not find anything. (can post the log if needed).

2. JRT deleted four files in APPData. See below.

3. Sophos did not find anything. (can post the log if needed).

4. Not sure what it means, but on the security check log (see my first response), Windows firewall was enabled and then "disabled" ?? Does this mean some hidden program is able to disable the firewall ???

Unfortunately, when typing "google.com" on IE, the site is still re-directed to "google.co.il". Seems to me that the source of the "infection" is still lurking somewhere in the computer. What would be the next step? Please advise. Thank you again.

Seraphin,

I am having the same issue. It happens on both PC's, and both iPhones (but on the iPhones, it ONLY happens when connected via WiFi - NOT when connected via Verizon). Because of that, I have TWC looking into whether it is a pipeline issue, not a device issue. Haven't tried tethering one of the PC's via Verizon, but may.

I think the following observation MIGHT be worth reporting and I am also hoping to get more feedback from the BC experts on this particular issue.

(1) (it should have occurred to me earlier) I brought my infected laptop to my office and used the company's intranet to access the internet. When I typed in "google.com" in both IE and Firefox, it NOW went to "www.google.com", NOT "www.google.co.il"  !!!!

(2) in light of what DESNYC posted, I suspected that it IS possible that TWC pipeline might be an issue.

(3) ** IF ** it is indeed an issue from TWC/internet service provider, is there ANYTHING we could do to ensure our "data" (e.g. password, online bank account ...etc) is secure in and out of our computer ??????

(4) somewhat related to the issue of the URL "google.co.il" : after I ran CCleaner and TFC to remove all (?) traces of "google.co.il" in my office, I tested the URL "google.com" under Firefox. While I was typing, the auto-fill (from Firefox?) provided a drop-down with a few websites that match part of my typing, among which was the "google.co.il". I thought CCleaner + TFC should have removed ALL traces of web search history and temp files ?? If correct, why was "google.co.il" still among the suggested website URLs ???

Any advice is welcome. Thank you !!

Windows firewall was enabled and then "disabled"

Please check firewall settings. If it's on, you're OK.

What country are you in?

TWC = Time Warner Cable?

Oh, sorry. I automatically assumed DESNYC is ALSO from New York City (but I actually don't know where that person is from).

I live in New York City and yes TWC means Time Warner Cable. On "google.co.il" page, if I force to choose my location using "Use precise location" at the bottom of the google page, my location would be identified as New York, NY.

When "google.co.il" takes over "google.com", at the right bottom corner of "google.co.il" page, there would be an option to "use google.com". I have to choose "google.com" or else everything on the page will be displayed in Hebrew.

At work, while none of these would happen on my "infected laptop", the loading of each page is noticeably slow, especially compared to another laptop that I have in the office.

Will double-check from home if my firewall is on there.

What would be the next thing to do regarding "google.co.il" or any other potential source of infection (if any) in my allegedly infected laptop? Thank you as always for your time and help.

Let's try to reset your router.

Turn the computer off.

On your router, you'll find a pinhole marked "Reset".
Keep pushing the hole, using a pencil, or a paperclip until all lights briefly come off and on.
NOTE. Simple router disconnecting from a power source will NOT do.
Restart computer.

NOTE. You may need to re-check your router security settings, as described HERE

I believe I've reset my router successfully. However, "google.com" still gets redirected (I've reinstalled Firefox and set the homepage to "www.google.com". When I launched Firefox, the homepage still went to "www.google.co.il" and everything was displayed in Hebrew). :nono:

I've tried to "clean" my laptop again beginning with AdwCleaner > JRT > MBAM. AdwCleaner found two files in Firefox and I've deleted them. JRT removed four files/folders. MBAM found nothing. (logs can be posted if helpful).

Now I am stumped. What's this thing in my computer (?) that refuses to be removed? Or is it really from/through the router/internet service provider?

Will bring my laptop to work today and re-check there if the homepage still gets redirected. :ranting:

Please let me know what to do next. Thank you.

At work, when Firefox was launched, it went straight to "www.google.com" as expected. What does this mean now? Any insight will be appreciated. Thank you.

Seraphin,

I am in NYC also. TWC just confirmed it is an issue on their end (had to be bumped up all the way to Level 3 support to find someone who knew about it - said it is a very new issue and engineering is working on it). FYI
