I have a Toshiba Qosmio i7 X505-890 laptop running Win7 Ultimate (64-bit).  Yes, it has heat issues but that is not why I am here.  I have more than my fair share of problems with this beast over the years but this time, I am at my wits end.

It started a few days ago when I accidentally shut down with a Windows update pending that I knew would fail.  I suspect something else happened anyway (like a thermal shutdown) but either way, since then, whenever I log on as any of the users set up, I get a temporary user profile.  I have searched the Internet far and wide and found a lot of information and "solutions", including here at BC ... but all has to been to no avail.

There appears to be numerous and sundry other issues which may or may not be related.  Perhaps I am missing something simple.

I have tried all the standard remedies for corrupt user profiles, except one.  I simply don't have enough space to create a new profile and copy files over.  I am not sure it would work anyway since every profile became corrupted at once, looking at the ProfileList registry entries.  There seemed to be an issue with Windows Search and I rebuilt the index.  I could probably add a long list of other things I tried but it is probably best to just start over from scratch with somebody here who knows a lot more than me.

To start with, here's a snapshot of the System Event Log, followed by the Application Event Log; the logs themselves are attached in a 7z (zipped) file attached to this post.

I truly appreciate anyone and everyone who makes the time to help me with this.

Espy

If you don't have the space to create another profile, then you probably have problems with the system because of that.

A user profile takes less than 200mb to create.

Windows likes to have about 15% free space in order to do things in the background.

As you get even less free space, the system has to work harder to perform these background tasks.

Eventually, when there's little free space, the system slows to a crawl while trying to do it's essential background operations in a limited space.

I have vision problems and can't easily read the smaller text that you're using.

Also, the event viewer report should be in the .evtx format so that we can manipulate in order to see patterns.

Once you've freed up 15% free space, please provide this report:

Please do the following:
- open Event Viewer (run eventvwr.msc from the "Run" dialog)

Thank you!  Hopefully this font size works better for you.  Easier for me to sit further away from the monitor, right?  :smash:

Attached are the event files with the admin events added in addition.

I have enough space on my system drive; just possibly not enough to create a full copy of an existing user profile in full.  Having said that, I am using junctions to point C:\Users to D:\Users and so on; all targets being on a second drive which has plenty of space.  My concern was that all user profiles appear to have been corrupted, even ones I was not using.  I am working with the administrator profile right now (also corrupted) and that is probably the smallest one I have.

Thanks for the tip on HWMonitor.  I had been using different software but it was a bit buggy beyond basic monitoring.

- expand the Custom Views category (left click on the > next to the words "Custom Views")
- right click on the "Administrative Events" heading
- select "Save all Events in Custom View as..."
- save the file as Admin.evtx
- zip up the file (right click on it, select "Send to", select "Compressed (zipped) folder")
- upload it with your next post (if it's too big, then upload it to a free file-hosting service and post a link here).

Just noticed I have the $WINDOWS.~* directories on my system disk so I moved them and created junctions for them as well.  I now have at least 30% space available on my 64GB SSD system drive.

Thank you!

The biggest problem in the Admin logfile appears to be that the Server service isn't started.

Please go to services.msc and set the Server service to Automatic

Be advised that this may not work - as there are errors with the Server service starting also.

Beyond that, it seems to me that the operating system is very, very messed up.

If you'd like, you can try to repair Windows using this link:  https://www.winhelp.us/non-destructive-reinstall-of-windows-7.html

But, with the changes to the system that you've been making, I can't help but wonder that a tweak/tweaks may have messed the system up.

Do you have a System Restore point that was set before the problems occurred?  If so, try going back to that to see if it helps.

FYI - there's at least one instance of a BSOD crash in the last couple of days.  Unfortunately the crash dump failed to initialize - so it wasn't saved.

But, let's have a look at these reports:  Please run this report collecting tool so that we can provide a complete analysis:  http://omgdebugging.com/bsod-inspector/
When done a Notepad document will open with the name of the file and it's location.
By default it'll be a .zip file located on your Desktop
Simply upload the .zip file with your next post and we'll move on from there.

Thank you!  Your reply gave me quite a bit to do and check.  I am going to leave things as they are at this point (stuck in Safe Mode with a temporary user profile) until instructed to do otherwise.  Further comments in context in this font and color below.

The biggest problem in the Admin logfile appears to be that the Server service isn't started.

Please go to services.msc and set the Server service to Automatic

The Server service is set to automatic.  It is stopped because I am stuck in Safe Mode for the moment.

Some very cool resources on this website.  Looks like the process described is really just an upgrade-in-place and I would prefer to leave this on the table as a last resort.  Part of the reason for this is that with all I have moved to other partitions (Program Files, Program Data and Users) with corresponding registry changes and some bad experiences with Microsoft very occasionally using the System Volume regardless how I have things set up.

But, with the changes to the system that you've been making, I can't help but wonder that a tweak/tweaks may have messed the system up.

Do you have a System Restore point that was set before the problems occurred?  If so, try going back to that to see if it helps.

Unfortunately, I exhausted all available restore points getting to this point.  That in itself is interesting because I restored to points well before I started having these *new* problems.

FYI - there's at least one instance of a BSOD crash in the last couple of days.  Unfortunately the crash dump failed to initialize - so it wasn't saved.

I suspect that with the Win10 directories taking up as much space as they were, there simply was not enough space to create a dump.  I have since cleaned up a little more, so perhaps now I will start getting BSODs and dumps rather than simply restarting.

Unfortunately it appears that the OS installed isn't legitimate.
Please get a legitimate copy of the OS installed and we'll be glad to help.

Here's suggestions on how to ensure that your version is legitimate:  http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/genuine

Please be aware that we may not be able to fix it (as the hacks that were done to activate it will cause the OS to behave differently than we expect it to). If that's the case, our efforts to help may just waste your time. Secondly, the forum rules prohibit assisting with pirated software - so the topic would be closed if that is the case.

As a courtesy, I will offer an analysis of your issues using the reports you provided.
I will not answer any questions about the analysis until the system is made legitimate.
If you do make it legitimate, please submit a new set of reports for us to check.

Only 253 Windows Update hotfixes installed.  Most systems with SP1 have 350 or more.  Please visit Windows Update and get ALL available updates (it may take several trips to get them all).

These devices have problems in Device Manager:

Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter    {5D624F94-8850-40C3-A3FA-A4FD2080BAF3}\VWIFIMP\5&1017459&0&01    This device is disabled.
Lexmark X422    ROOT\IMAGE\0000    This device is disabled.
Security Processor Loader Driver    ROOT\LEGACY_SPLDR\0000    This device is not present, is not working properly, or does not have all its drivers installed.

I would suggest enabling your Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter - and then updating it (through Windows Update).

It's safe to leave the Lexmark disabled - but it's always a good idea to update drivers (so you'd have to enable the printer in order to update it's drivers)

The Security Processor Loader Driver is a critical driver on your system and MUST be updated (through Windows Update).

Your UEFI/BIOS (version 2.90) dates from 2010.  Please check at the manufacturer's website to see if there are any UEFI/BIOS updates available for your system.  If you are able to install the update through Windows (without booting from an external drive), then go ahead and update it.  WARNING - if the computer might shut down during this procedure, please don't do it, as this may physically damage the computer and prevent it from booting.
