Windows 7 won't shut down

Windows 7 laptop won't shut down.   It just hangs there until I do a forced shut down.   I checked device manager and I do have an unknown device with a question mark, I have tried deleting/uninstalling and searching for drivers.   None of this worked.   I don't know if this is why it won't shut down or not.   I really need to get this resolved, any help would be greatly appreciated.

You can find out what that device is and then find the driver.

 

In Windows:

 

  1.  Left click on start (or the globe) in the lower left.

  2.  In the window that opens, on the right hand side, right click on "Computer" and select "Properties"

  3.  In the "System" window that opens, on the upper far left, click on "Device Manager".

  4.  In Device Manager, double left click on the unknown device.

  5.  In the window that opens for that device, there are 4 tabs across the top, click on the "Details" tab.

  6.  In that new window, there is a drop box named "Property". Click the down arrow to the right of the box and select "Hardware Id's" (should be the second choice down).

  7.  Google the hardware ID and you can find out what it is.

 

  The Id's will be something like "PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0611&SUBSYS_092419F1&REV_A2"

You don't need the entire line to search.  For example, in the one above, Google for "PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0611".

That identifies that it's a PCI device and the next two pieces of info are the vendor and device id's..  The rest of the line just narrows it down to specific details about the device that you don't need for your search.

 

  Be careful when you Google that as you will get tons of hits for those third party driver sites.  Just use the info to find out what the device is and then go to your manufacturers site to get the driver. 

 

  As for Windows hanging on shutdown, that could be a lot of different things, but typically, it's due to a conflict either between a driver or a piece of software.  It's possible it is because of the missing driver.

 

  Have you tried booting into Safe mode and then see if it does a proper shutdown?

I read through the toolbox info you posted...it lists the Hardware ID for the missing hardware driver, it is "ACPI\TOS6205\4&1818A180&0".  A brief search and it seems this has to do with the hard drive shock protection.

 

To be absolutely sure, you need to go to Toshiba's site and enter your exact model number and make sure you have all the Windows 7 drivers for it.

You need to update your Adobe Reader to XI.  Unsupported version of Adobe Reader can be a potential security problem.

 

I don't see an antivirus installed, am I missing something here?

Clicking on the link above will start the download automatically.
 
 

 
Please run System File Checker
 
The sfc /scannow command scans all protected system files and replaces corrupted and incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions.
 
Click on the Start orb rsz_1rsz_1rsz_start_orb_zpshjewtibd.png and then type cmd in the Search programs and files box.
 
In the pane above the search box Programs will appear with cmd below it, right click on cmd and select Run as administrator.
 
If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, enter the password, or click Allow.
 
This will open the Elevated Command Prompt, it will look similar to the image below.

Copy and paste sfc /scannow in the command prompt, then press Enter to start the scan.  
 
If the scan finds no integrity  problems the scan will stop.  Type in exit, then press Enter to stop the scan.
 
When the scan is finished and if intergrity issues are found, please do the following.
 
Click on the Start orb rsz_1rsz_1rsz_start_orb_zpshjewtibd.png then copy and paste the following in the Search programs and files box.
 
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >"%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt"
 
This will place a new icon on the desktop titled sfcdetails.  Double click on this icon to  
the CBS log, copy and paste the log in your topic.
 
If this fails to place the icon on your desktop run the command from the Command Prompt.  Use the instructions I provided at the start of this tutorial.
 
This log may be very large, if you have problems posting it try breaking it into smaller parts.  When you copy these parts you will highlight the section you are going to copy.  If you leave that section highlighted it will give you a quick reference for where you left off.  Do not use a host website to post this.  I will not download anything to my computer unless I know exactly what it contains.
 
 

Please download and install Speccy to provide us with information about your computer.  Clicking on this link will automatically initiate the download. 
 
When Speccy opens you will see a screen similar to the one below.

The following screen will appear, click on Yes.

Thank you everyone.   I had already run sfc /scannow with no issues.   I also updated Adobe to the newest reader.   The computer does have Norton on it.  (yes, I hate Norton too, but that is what is on it).   I went to Toshiba's site and downloaded all of the drivers to see if any of them are the missing one.  No luck so far.   I have not attempted the Safe mode but will try that next.   Thank you everyone for your suggestions.

I should note that now the machine will shut down, but now I am getting this weird message at start up and I can't find anything on it.

Ok, I found the problem with the start up error and fixed it, but now the stupid machine will not shut down again.    According to the device manager I have no conflicts with hardware, but machine will no longer shut down.   This is driving me nuts.
