· OS - Windows 10, 64-bit
· originally Windows 7
· Windows 10 installed via free upgrade
· Age of system: 2.5 years
· Age of OS installation: 3 months, have not re-installed

· CPU: Intel Core i5-3317U, 1.7GHz
· Video Card: Intel HD Graphics 4000

· System Manufacturer: Lenovo
· Exact model number: Lenovo IdeaPad U310, model name 4375
· Laptop

Basically, I've moved into a university residence and paid for Internet access, but when I plug in using the ethernet cable or try to connect to the wireless network (the router is TP-Link TLWR700N), my computer gives me the sad face and restarts. It can't restart successfully if I leave the ethernet cable in, either. The moment it crashes seems to be when it identifies the network (because it'll say 'Identifying...' for a bit first, and before I activated my internet it would just stay on 'Identifying...' forever).
I'm going to be out for a couple hours but when I come back I can add any additional details that are needed, just let me know.

Your UEFI/BIOS (version 65CN13WW) dates from 2012.  Please check at the manufacturer's website to see if there are any UEFI/BIOS updates available for your system.  If you are able to install the update through Windows (without booting from an external drive), then go ahead and update it.  WARNING - if the computer might shut down during this procedure, please don't do it, as this may physically damage the computer and prevent it from booting.

Only 3 Windows Update hotfixes installed.  Most build 10586 (TH2/1511) systems have more than this.  Please visit Windows Update and get ALL available Windows Updates.

bdfwfpf.sys is blamed in several of the BSOD's mentioned in the WER section of the MSINFO32 report (and in the memory dumps that I analyzed below).

This is a driver component of your BitDefender protection.

Please:

- uninstall BitDefender temporarily

- ensure that Windows Defender and the Windows firewall are activated (for protection while testing)

- reboot

- then try connecting and see what happens.  Let us know if the system still crashes.

If this solves the crashes, try installing a freshly downloaded copy of BitDefender to see if that works for you.

Sorry for the much-delayed reply.

First off, uninstalling Bitdefender did the trick. I've reinstalled it since and the network still seems to be working. Note to anyone with the same problem: In the uninstaller, you need to select the 'I want to permanently remove it' uninstall, *not* the 'I want to reinstall it' option (or it just crashes again when you reinstall). You'll be able to reinstall it after anyway, no worries. As for the other recommendations:

According to the Lenovo website, there is a UEFI/BIOS update for Windows 7 and 8, but not specifically for Windows 10. Those updates can't apply to my computer, right?

I went to Windows Update and checked for updates. I think it was downloading something at first, but after it was done the check, the update history said no new updates have been installed since Jan. 6. So I guess there wasn't actually anything to install, or I was imagining things. Anyhow, when I run it now it finds no new updates.

Thank you very much for your help!

I'm glad to hear that you were able to fix this.  I've seen instances of other problems with BitDefender at another forum that I post at.

In later versions of Windows (W8 and above) UEFI updates are essential for communication between the UEFI and the OS.

That being said, if there isn't one for W10 we generally use those for earlier versions of Windows (W8 and above).

But be sure that it's a later version before attempting to install it (and make sure that it applies to your system!)

I just searched Lenovo for your IdeaPad U310 and didn't find a BIOS/UEFI update for any OS version on the US site.

As long as Windows says that there's no updates available - that's all that you can do!

Not sure how to tell if a W8 update is appropriate for my W10 computer. I found the Windows 7 and 8 BIOS updates here under Component > BIOS/UEFI: http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/ideapad-u-series-laptops/ideapad-u310?linkTrack=Homepage:Body_Search%20Products

Don't use either one.  There's enough difference between the versions that they may not apply to your system.

Best case is that they won't install.  Worst case is that they completely break the system so that it won't boot.

Alright, sounds like I'm set then. Thanks again!

Edit: BitDefender caused crash again. I'm just keeping it uninstalled until I don't need this internet connection anymore, I have other antivirus options.

In the other forum the posters found that BitDefender 2015 worked better than BitDefender 2016 to prevent BSOD's
