Hey guys,

I go to a site everyday that auto-refreshes every minute or so, but everytime it does it jumps in front of all other windows and I lose control of anything I've been working on.

e.g. I'll be typing an email, looking down at the keyboard, and that window refreshes and jumps in front of everything as I'm not looking. When I look up, I lost everything I've been typing and have to click back on that window to gain control.

Does anyone have any ideas? Can't tell if it's a browser (Explorer) setting or Windows (XP professional)setting or something else.

Thanks
Micky

No way we can know right now where to start or what is cuasing it so a good place to start is with HijackThis.

I suggest you post a HijackThis log for examination.
A member of the HijackThis Team will walk you through, step by step, how to disinfect your computer.
Once you post your log, don't make any changes to your system, as that could change the results of the posted log, making it difficult to properly clean your system.

Read Preparation Guide for use before posting a HijackThis Log.
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/34773/preparation-guide-for-use-before-using-malware-removal-tools-and-requesting-help/

Please read, and follow, all directions carefully!!!

Then, run a log, and post it in the HijackThis forum, at this link below.
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/f/22/virus-trojan-spyware-and-malware-removal-logs/ Do not, fix anything, yet.
A member, of the HJT Team, will help you out.
It may take a while to get a response, because the HJT Team are very busy. Please, be patient, as these people are volunteers. They will help you out, as soon as possible.

NOTE:

Once you have made the post, please, DO NOT make another post in the HJT forum, until it has been responded to by a member of the HJT Team. The first thing they look for, when looking for logs to reply to, is 0 replies. If you make another post, there will be 1 reply. The team member, glancing over the replies, might assume someone is already helping you out, and will not respond. So, just make your post, and let it sit there, until a team member responds. This way you will be taken care of, in the most timely manner.

I posted my HijackThis log but no reply. Not sure it's spyware. I just think it's a setting. Can anyone help?

Thanks

LINK to mickey357's HiJackThis log.

Sometimes it can take a few days to get a response in the HiJackThis forum as the workers there are very busy. Right now there are 81 unanswered logs.

We also need to be careful not to make changes to your system, or else your log will be old and useless.

However, I would like you to try something so that I can understand a little better what is going on. Please go to this website: http://www.crystalcruises.com/liveviews.aspx Click on Bridge View. This window will refresh every minute or so. Tell me if you get the same results with this window as you have been getting with the one you visit everyday mentioned in your first post.

Hey guys,

Thanks for the replies.

Medab - I tried disabling META-Refresh. Started a new browser & went to the site. But it still seems to jump ahead of all windows or, if minimized, jump off of the task bar and in front of everything.

Albert - I did bring up http://www.crystalcruises.com/liveviews.aspx but it doesn't seem to auto-refresh for some reason.

I appreciate all your help so far.

Thanks
Micky

It's investors.com - they refresh their page every 30 seconds.

But it seems to be happening with any stand-alone auto-refresh page like CNN, ESPN...

I tried an auto-refresh program with a page that doesn't refresh by itself and that page jumped to the front as well. Really odd. Wasn't happening two weeks ago.

Thanks

Have you downloaded any updates, added or removed anything before it started occurring?

I went there & it updated itself.
It did not jump from behind the window I put in front of it.
I viewed source & there was no meta refresh code.
They use a javascript to update stuff on the page.

Your situation is unusual.

I use TweakUI to prevent applications from stealing focus.

Great, I'll try TweakUI.

Thanks again everyone.

Damn - Even TWEAKUI doesn't work. Also disabled META-refresh & disables third party browser extensions. Can't figure it out...

Albert - I did bring up http://www.crystalcruises.com/liveviews.aspx but it doesn't seem to auto-refresh for some reason

Go back to that site and click on Bridge View. That is the window that will auto refresh every minute or so.

That is a site with cams on the front of their cruise ships. The point of having you go there was to see if ALL sites that autorefresh give you the same issue, or is it related to the ONE site that you usually visit.

I think you're right Albert. This site does not steal focus on refresh.

It seem that sitemail, CNN and a few others are.
