If you are running Windows 10 and have Bitdefender Internet Security 2016 installed, and if you try to launch VirtualBox 5.0 you'll get:

"VT-x is being used by another hypervisor (VERR_VMX_IN_VMX_ROOT_MODE).

VirtualBox can't operate in VMX root mode. Please close all other virtualization programs. (VERR_VMX_IN_VMX_ROOT_MODE).

Result Code: E_FAIL (0x80004005)
Component: ConsoleWrap
Interface: IConsole {872da645-4a9b-1727-bee2-5585105b9eed}"

and of course it won't start.

Some indication that this might be related to Adobe Flash updates for Edge and  Internet Explorer from Microsoft.  :smash:

I hope the techs at Bitdefender can fix it soon.

Similar issues have been reported the past several years at both the Bitdefender and Virtualbox forums.

I believe Bitdefender has fixed this in the past only to have it reoccur. There are at least three companies involved here and everything is proprietary. A good reason to use Vbox on a Linux hst.

Yes re-occurrence appears to be the case and it's been going on several years now.

Do you know if other security suites like ESET or Kaspersky have had similar problems or is it just Bitdefender?

I have not read of any reports with Kaspersky and only one topic with issues involving ESET, AVG and Symantec back in mid 2014.

There is one suite that I know (and use) having issues with VirtualBox, but it's due to a bug in the VB bridged networking adapter that Oracle refuses to fix. Instead of making VB unable to launch however, the bug will cause the affected machine to BSoD.

A BSOD is even more inconvenient than an error message.

The vendor added detection of the driver to the suite so VirtualBox users with the driver will not install the suite by accident, however one can install VirtualBox into a machine with the AV suite already installed. That is not recommended however, as it will lead to BSoDs.

Success! I reinstalled VirtualBox by running the Install as Administrator and it is now working. Posting this from an Ubuntu 15.10 Guest on Windows 10 Host.
