I just got an old laptop from a friend.  It is running XP Professional. I can't get online with it either wirelessly or by ethernet.  Hope someone can help.

I should probably give you a little more information.  It is a Dell Latitude.  When I try to check the connection, it says "acquiring network address".  It gets stuck at that point. That's all I know at this point.

hi,

Download minitoolbox. At the top check-select all- then click the Go button. When the log opens you can copy/paste the results in your reply and we can go from there. Iam usually only on BC once or twice per day.

ok thanks for the info, lets go with this first:

Name: Ethernet Controller
Description: Ethernet Controller
Device ID: PCI\VEN_14E4&DEV_1673&SUBSYS_02061028&REV_02\4&1FD2E0F5&0&0030
Problem: : The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)

From start if you type in the search field: devmgmt.msc  and click enter- the Windows device manager should open up. Can also get there from the control panel.

Click on network adapters, right click on the Ethernet device and click update drivers. The windows wizard should open up. select the option to Search automatically. It will look on the HD for a driver. It may find the driver, it may not.  Obviously it cant connect to windows update to look there.

Another option is to go to the Dell site, on another machine and using the service tag number or make/model find the needed ethernet driver, download it to a USB flash drive transfer and  it to the computer- then get the wizard to come up again and use the browse my computer for driver software option and point it to the driver you just transferred. This should get your wired connection going.

Okay. I did as you said.  I had to download new driver to USB drive but I was able to install it.  It seems to have worked insofar as I can get online now with a wired connection. Excellent start. Thank you.

Ok, good. some things to try; Have you recently briefly powered off your computer, router and modem then restarted all three again.

So if you open up device manager again, under network adapters is there a yellow exclamation point next to the wireless adapter? (Dell Wireless 1390 WLAN Mini-Card)  right clicking it- is it enabled? Right click properties, general tab- device working properly?

From start type in cmd to open a cmd prompt. At the prompt type in whats below, then reboot your machine and see how it goes

sc start dhcp

okay, there was no yellow exclamation point, adapter was enabled and working properly. When I ran sc start dhcp it said StartService FAILED 1056: An instance of the service is already running.  When I reboot, I still get the endless acquiring network address notice. Ethernet connection still works though.

ok. thanks for the info. Do you know if this: Dell Mobile Broadband Card Utility is managing the wireless? Bring it up and see if thats the case. There may be some options in there for getting the wireless going?

That error message, just means the DHCP client is already running, which we want.

try this; Start> in the search field type in services.msc. Windows service panel will open. Under the name column look for;

wireless zero configuration service, right click on it and select properties.  Under the Service Status- click on Stop. Under the Start Up type- select disable.

Reboot machine and see if wireless starts functioning.

wont be back online for 8-10 hrs or so.

You see any other installed dell software that might allow you to configure the wireless?

Okay, I did as you asked. Disabled wireless zero configuration service and rebooted.  Still stuck on "acquiring network address"

So if you toggle over the network icon, do you see any wireless network? You can re-enable the Windows zero config service by making it Start and Automatic. Reboot after the change
Why dont you temporarily log into the router and remove the Wireless security options be selecting none and see how that goes.
