My laptop tries to start up, XP comes up then a blue screen saying that it can't find winsvr.exe which I now gather is an infection and I probably have something called DDEsvr.exe in the startup folder. However, as I can't start XP I can't get rid of it. D oes anyone have any suggestions?

Can you start in safe mode?

If you can, start in safe mode with command prompt and type in:

%systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

and press enter.
