I have a computer that is about 8 years old now and it runs Windows XP Home. It was built for gaming about 8 years ago, so back then it wasn't too bad of a computer. I let it go and didn't use it very much for several years. I am looking to reset everything back to factory settings without losing my data. That also applies to my Bios..why you might ask? Back when I use to game on that computer alot I was always tweaking things in the bios. I can't remember exactly what it was that I was tweaking, but I am pretty sure that I made some changes in there.

My Objective honestly is just to just get this PC running top notch for what its worth. Because I would still like to game on it from time to time since I have not yet bought a newer console gaming setup yet. But back to the "objective" part, I just want that computer overhauled/updated/boosted/tweaked to its very best ability without hurting my computer.

My PC specs are as follows: AMD Athlon 3700+ 64 bit(I think its 64 bit but not 100% sure), GeForce 7900GS Graphics card, 1.5 GB's of RAM.

If you would like to join me and help me I would be honored and gratefully thankful for it.

If you need any other information to assist me in the best way possible please just ask me.

I run ccleaner all the time. What I don't know anything about is the "ssd" that you brought up. What is an ssd?

Manufacturer and model for this system, please?

Louis

It is a custom built computer.. It's not like a Dell or a Sony, as an example. What is the best way to get all the information you need to help me find all the driver updates that I need and whatever else that you think it might need?

Now I have done checked my Graphics card which is a GeForce 7900GS (It is up to date). I have onboard sound currently running, which is AC'97 Realtek Audio. I had somebody just yesturday tell me where to go to get the latest driver for that but I am not sure if it is the latest driver for the sound or not. But I am almost 100% positive that my graphics card is up to date because I went to Nvidias' website a week ago and when checking for latest driver for my graphics card it said "Up to date". I doubt there are any newer updates for my graphics card. It is an older one anyways. probably 8- years old, so that is probably the last update on that graphics card anyways. But yah never know.

Hope that helps some. Hope to here from you soon Louis. Thank you sir for the help :]

System has 2GB RAM installed, max is 4GB.  I would double the RAM currently installed.  PC2100/2700/3200.

Registry cleaner/optimizer...Jet Boost...installed.  I would uninstall this and never consider reinstalling it.

I would uninstall ALL AVG apps currently installed...then reinstall only the current version of AVG Internet Security, with none of the fluff junk AVG may try to install.

I would run the chkdsk /r command on the C: partition.  Start/Run...type chkdsk /r, hit Enter.  Enter Y in new screen, hit Enter.  Reboot, the command will run before booting into Windows.

Actually when going to System View. It shows that I have 1.5 gb's of RAM. I believe this is also true, as I kind of remember a long time ago I took half of a gig (512) RAM stick and put it in a family members computer because it needed it at the time more than I did. So I think something isn't reading right with the Speccy program..In all honesty. I can take a screenshot of it when going to Start menu, going to System (Where you can view Processor and Ram) It says 1.5 GB of RAM.

Then going to the next step you recommend uninstalling Jet Boost. Simple enough, will do.

The Only AVG programs I have on my computer are the basic programs. I think there is AVG Zen which is where you can protect all of your computers from just 1 device. Its like a Administrators Panel for System security on all your PC's (I think) but not sure. Other than that I don't really have anything installed. I have a toolbar from AVG that lets you know about websites. Tracking information. Ratings and such.

Ill delete anything I can and get back to you on that.

As far as installing more RAM. I don't have the money right now, nor do I even know if I want to put money in this computer because it is so old, I might just build another one (one day) not anytime soon as I am broke as a joke. Lol. Plus it has windows XP on it and I am scared using that computer BC Microsoft stopped supporting it a long time ago, so I am kind of in a danger zone because of no more security updates and such. Plus tech support at micosoft is very limited since they stopped the support.

To run the command you are talking about to I just click Start>run>chkdsk/r     <--chkdsk/r is that the right way to type it in the command prompt window?

Ohh one more thing. I only have the AVG free edition. What you might have seen from the software I ran to give you the information is probably from the free 30 day trial of there internet security. I only have the FREE version of AVG now, and I don't even think the free version has internet security for free.

NOTE: Sorry, I accidentally quoted myself and I didn't mean too. Sorry for two posts by the way as well.

Any other opinions on why speccy says I have 2 gigs of ram, but when going to "system" in the "control panel", it says 1.5 gigs of ram?

**I was also thinking about doing a CCleaner action called "wipe free space" to cleanup my drive. Wouldn't this delete all the files that aren't aren't "really deleted" after uninstalling or deleting file from your computer?

Any other opinions from anyone would be nice.

I have been thinking about my drivers as well. Can anyone help me update my drivers? Or at least show me how I should go about checking them first.

I am pretty sure my graphics card and sound drivers are up to date because I did those myself just last week. But as far as other miscellaneous driver updates for other things I wouldn't know how or where to get these drivers honestly.
