I was getting an error message on my Carbonite saying it has to quit or something like that so I called Carbonite and they did some digging and said that the VSS is corrupt and to bring it to a local tech to get it fixed.  So, here I am talking to my local techs!  :-)

The computer has been running a bit slow and I have a a couple of blue screens over the last few weeks .  I am planning to get a new laptop somewhat soon but I want this working for now any way.

I have a desktop with XP Professional.  I just recently did a defrag, scanpst, ran Malwarebytes, chkdsk and made an image so that is good.  I also have a laptop that is an exact duplicate of the desktop so can always use that for now.

So, can anyone help me un-corrupt the VSS??  Thanks so much.

Open a command prompt and type the following.

vssadmin list writers

What is the output?

You can copy the text by clicking on the little icon at the left menu bar in the command prompt window. Select Edit > Select All. Then Edit > copy. You can then paste it into a text file and edit what you do not want posted such as your user name. Then copy and paste from the text file into your next post. Did the command give any errors or did it list the writer as Microsoft?

Go here and download the 32bit VSS.exe file at the bottom of the page and run it in an admin account. Reboot and do the vssadmin writers command again.

Sorry, the name is vssfix.exe. You need to unhide file extensions in XP if you do not see .exe.

Run the Vssfix.exe file in Safe Mode. Then do the Vssadmin command again.

Edit: If you still get an error then follow the steps here.
