A SONY VAIO SVL2413 originally on Windows 8.1 and working fine. Upgraded to W10 and can not browse the internet, although I can PING google as 62.24.208.177 but not as www.google.com.
Now updated to W10 TH2 (1511) no improvement.

Can ping other devices on the network, and I can access the VAIO from another PC on the network and transfer files. However the VAIO can not SEND files. The network troubleshooter reports "protocols are missing".

Help please - I haven't much hair left!

Try to remove the google DNS from the network card settings and use different browser from edge.

The router shall give you automatic DHCP.

I hope this will help,

Andy

Based upon your model number it appears you're in Europe, since the 2413 series of the SVL machines is supported via Sony's European support site.

I absolutely agree with dicke that you need to go to the support site and download any and all drivers specifically noted as being updates for Windows 10, and even the ones that aren't that are for your wireless or ethernet that are newer than those already installed on your computer.  Windows 10 has been notorious, and justifiably so, for issues such as the one you're having that are directly tied to outdated drivers.  You cannot trust that they're not even if Device Manager shows the device is functioning normally.

Your best bet is to download the updated drivers, then, on a device by device basis via Device Manager:

- Uninstall the current driver

- Uninstall the actual device

- Install the replacement driver

- If necessary, do a "Scan for New Hardware" or Reboot.

@Andy - I have already tried:

getting a DNS automatically

using google DNS

using OpenDNS

Using the Opera portable browser.

@dicke, britechguy: Sony "support" says contact Microsoft.  Any guesses what Microsoft will say?

I've downloaded and installed the latest Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller driver - from RealTek (thanks Sony).  No change.

Try disabling your wireless cards and see if anything happens, if not try these commands in an elevated CMD prompt

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2 or SP3.

Start, Run, CMD, OK to open a command prompt.

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ip reset reset.log

reboot and try again.

whistler1,

If what chalup proposes doesn't fix your issue you may want to consider hitting the "Report" link below my (or anyone else's) post and asking the moderator to move this thread over to the Networking forum.  While it's happening on Windows 10 it appears that the "usual fixes" haven't worked and deeper digging into the networking specific elements is going to need to happen next.

Oops, I didn't mean to post again. Ignore the windows versions, this works on win10 also.

I see you can reach 127.0.0.1 this is your local host.
Can you try pinging 192.168.1.1 ( this is your router/modem ).
If the ping to the router/modem is working correctly the best you can do is to completely remove the LAN and Wireless drivers and reinstall them.
This way you will set everything to default.
Do you know if your internet provider is locking your computer via MAC address?
Is it possible to have set cloned MAC address and now the settings are missing.
In general I`ll need more info about the Router/Modem as I think there is the problem.
Cheers,
Andy

Thanks Andy; yes I can ping the Modem; in fact I can access the internet via Opera - but only by putting in an IP address. The DNS does not work.

My router is fine, all my other (7) PCs work and the VAIO works fine when running Linux Mint.

Try removing all of the network drivers by removing the files as well.

asdfg2qw.jpg

Let Windows 10 to find proper drivers ( in case there are no drivers which i seriously doubt use the vendor drivers )

And for the sake of it remove this "Classic Shell" as thus bugging the windows 10 metro and can cause bizarre moments for sure :)

After the installation of the new drivers be sure you have removed the IPv6 form the network card settings, and flush the DNS settings with the following command line:
ipconfig /flushdns

ipconfig /registerdns

ipconfig /release

ipconfig /renew NETSH

winsock reset catalog

NETSH int ipv4

reset reset.log NETSH

Cheers,
Andy

At ipconfig /registerdns I get "registration of dns records failed - the parameter is incorrect."

netsh "there's no user specified settings to be reset"

following these up I found this thread

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-networking/windows-7-cannot-resolve-ip-addresses-from-domain/f04b646e-1d59-4841-a1e9-06be316f5088

and EVEN THOUGH I HAD GIVEN THE COMPUTER A NAME  it was not showing in "This PC" "properties".

I changed it to VAIO-X64 and

IT WORKS!

I`m happy you got solution.

The only explanation I can though about is to have some other computer in the network with the same name or the router is reserving IP address with the name of the computer, MAC and the OS.

Still pretty weird.

At the risk of committing 'overkill', i am reproducing the 'fix' found by whistler1......I have edited it for clarity.

Apparently, at some point about a week ago, or so, something erased my COMPUTER'S NAME!

I forgot how I found this out, but I think I was going to my device manager by right-clicking "Computer" icon and selecting "Properties" and happened to notice that, under "Computer name, domain, and workgroup settings", the "Computer name:" and "Full Computer name:" fields were blank!

SO, I clicked "Advanced system settings" on the left of the properties window, selected the "Computer Name" tab (1st one at the top on left of the window that popped up) and, down at "To rename this computer, click Change." I clicked the "Change..." button.

In the next window that popped up I re-entered the name I'd originally selected for my desktop, clicked the "More..." button and entered "kc.rr.com" in the "Primary DNS suffix of this computer:" field (as this is my Internet Service Provider - others may be different) and made sure the "Change primary DNS suffix when domain membership changes" checkbox was checked.

I then clicked okay on that window.  I then made sure the "Workgroup:" radio button was selected and typed "WORKGROUP" into the field under it, then clicked "OK".

Back to the original "System Properties" window I clicked "Apply" and "OK", then rebooted my system.

As Windows 7 was loading, suddenly all these programs that had been dormant for the past few days started popping up and loading and updating!  YAY!! lol

. You will, of course, have to contact your service provider to obtain the primary DNS suffix.

Hopefully this will help others not have to go through the terror I went through from not having internet access.
