Hello guys,

I've been searching on the Internet for a working solution but apparently I cannot find one.

When I want to run Windows 10 Update it closes at the same moment when it runs.

Here is my event log:

I have only two suggestions:

1.  Open a Command Prompt, elevated to run as administrator, and run the following command and restart your computer afterward:

               DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

See if this then fixes your problem with running Windows Update.  Note:  you must be connected to the internet when you do this.

2.  If number 1 does not succeed, go to the Media Creation Tool, and create the media you need to do an update to Windows using a bootable USB drive or DVD, then perform that update using that media.  You will want use the option of the MCT for creating Upgrade/Update media for another PC, even though you will be using it for your own.

Thank you britechguy. Suggestion #1 did not fix my problem.

I will try a bit more to find a fix and if it won't work I will go with fresh Media Creation Tool.

Just my 2¢:

Try the Reset tool using the Keep My Files option (Start...Settings...Update and Security...Recovery... press the "Get Started" button under Reset this PC)

If that doesn't work, then try the Reset tool using the Remove Everything option (backup your stuff first - this will wipe out all of your stuff).

usasma,

You may be able to clarify something here.   I did not suggest using the Reset feature (either option) because this essentially wipes things completely clean and starts with a new copy of Windows 10.  Any application programs or apps that are user installed are gone.

It was my understanding that, on a machine already running Windows 10 and on which updates have somehow stalled as far as the "big dot levels" go, that the media created by the Media Creation Tool could be used to run the equivalent of a Windows update to the latest build without resetting the machine as a part of that.  This is why I didn't go the Reset route.

         Am I mistaken?

Sorry if I stepped on your toes here.  I replied because Big0ne was looking for other fixes before going with the Media Creation Tool

In general, if I find that DISM doesn't work, my next step is to go with the Reset using the Keep My Files option.

I have several reasons for this:

- it's self-contained, so there's no need to make/do anything extra (other than run the program)

- it's less destructive than a Reset with Remove everything - and less destructive than the installation with the Media Creation Tool (and we've had a lot of success with it at work)

- it's essentially a repair install (as I recall from the XP days), so it refreshes all the WIndows files (and "resets" them to default)

Not all installed apps are gone.  But it leaves a file on the Desktop that tells you which are removed.

Makes it easier to reinstall.  And, IMO, by removing them it also removes another potential source of corruption.

I think that there were some significant changes made to the Refresh process in W8 (which didn't work well), and the resulting Reset w/Keep My Files is a great improvement over that.

Also, I've found that the "revert" function doesn't work well for me.  I've had success with it on relatively fresh systems (where W7 or W8 was recently installed and not customized much).

But when I try it on a well-used system it inevitably fails.  If I'm lucky the system will still boot to W10 - but at times I won't even be able to boot to that.

That then means that we have to wipe the system and reinstall the OS again - and may also have to do a backup if the customer wants one.

I have not tried reverting from one build to another in W10, but am guessing that it's basically the same process as a revert to W7/8 - so it'll likely have the same problems.

Next, I have suspicions that a Reset w/Remove Everything isn't quite the same as the Media Creation Tool installation.

I have had limited success at work with the Media Creation Tool when a Reset w/Remove Everything hasn't worked.

I'm not certain if this is due to my methods or to the tool - going to have to try it a couple of more times.

Also, I haven't used the "Upgrade this PC" tool option either.

I suspect that it's similar to a Refresh/Reset with Keep My Files - but have no documentation to support that.

I'll see if I can give it a try tomorrow at work (we're slow now, so I may not have a system to test it on).

Finally, I forgot to mention System Restore.  It's vastly improved since the XP days and has gotten better with each Windows release.

With W10 I feel it's good enough to recommend on a routine basis as a fixit tool (just after DISM, but before the Reset w/Keep My Files).

usasma,

First and foremost, no toe-stepping occurred and I apologize if what I wrote made it seem as though it had.

Believe it or not, I'm becoming far more frustrated with the glut of methods that do either exactly, or very much essentially, the same thing without any real effort on Microsoft's part to delineate the differences, and there have to be subtle ones for some of this stuff.

I thought that there was some way, using the media from the Media Creation Tool, to get a Windows 10 system that, for whatever reason, has stalled Windows updates for build progression to simply update to whatever build was in place when the media was created via the MCT.  That is as opposed to resetting, rerunning the true upgrade process (which is akin to resetting, but with keep files *and* everything else that was not deemed incompatible), or doing a full clean installation of Windows 10.

And unless you're doing this sort of stuff an a nearly daily basis, and I'll be the first to say I am not, it makes it all much more difficult to keep straight!

Microsoft explains disappearance of the Windows 10 November Update from Media tool

This is old, and outdated, news.   The November Update, AKA 1511, AKA 10586.21 [I think it was 21], is now long past as the latest build of Windows 10.  The last build I know of being offered by the Media Creation Tool is 10586.36.  This original Fall Update build was pulled, but the next build was introduced via the MCT (as well as Windows Update)  once they figured out what was tanking in the original Fall Update.

The actual build that is current is what gets created at the point in time you create your media with the Media Creation Tool.

I'm a Fast Ring Insider - so I'm running build 11082.1000

As each day passes I'm finding out more and more about these updates/update methods - each with their subtle differences.

I'm very disappointed at the lack of information about these tools also.

But, having done a bit of research on the recovery methods with W7/8, I find that the process is very, very complicated - and suppose that that is the reason for there being no easy answers.

I found yesterday that the MCT offers an update that preserves programs and settings (this was using an older version of the TechBench tool) - but have no clue how it does this (didn't have the time to test it yesterday), nor if it is similar to the Reset w/Keep My Files or not.

But, to further complicate matters, at work we use copies of the TechBench tool (our copy hasn't been updated since it first came out in mid-November), Windows Update, and downloads of the MCT in order to update to W10 (1511).

Our preferred method is the TechBench tool.
I'll use Windows Update if there are no more USB drives with the TechBench tool on them.

And, we use the MCT if the TechBench tool fails for any reason.

Here's an interesting article that describes some of the features of the "push-button reset".  The article has been updated for W10, but still uses the term "Refresh"

This seems to be the prevalent fix:

     Method 1:

  1. Open the Control Panel.
  2. Navigate to Control PanelPrograms and Features.
  3. There, click the ‘Installed updates’ link under the ‘Programs and Features’ item or you can press Win+R shortcut keys on your keyboard and type the following in the run box: ‘shell:AppUpdatesFolder’.
  4. Now, you to uninstall these KB files: KB0300850.
  5. Reboot the system and that’s it.

Method 2: Also, try this:

  1. Open the command prompt as Administrator
  2. Type and execute the following commands:
    wusa.exe /uninstall /kb: 300850
  3. Reboot your PC.

If that doesn't work, Google has these:

Yay toe-stepping =).

This problem is related with some nasty USB connected, you can try to remove all of the startup and services than unplug all of the USB devices connected.
Also I believe this is HP computer, remove all of the useless HP software as well.
If this doesn't help Windows Reset without loosing files is the best option :)
Cheers,
Andy
