A few days ago I noticed that every time I tried to wake my laptop, instead of it lighting up and bringing all the active programs up, it is booting up.

I tested it by simply clicking the "sleep" option and it instead simply shut down.

I'm running Windows 8.1

Any suggestions on where to start?

Most likely what is happening is that the system is trying to sleep - and it crashes while trying to sleep.

Often this is a BSOD event, but it can be due to other problems.

Beyond that, let's try looking at these reports:

1)  Please run this report collecting tool (even though you may not be reporting BSOD's) so we can provide a complete analysis:  http://omgdebugging.com/bsod-inspector/
When done a Notepad document will open with the name of the file and it's location.
By default it'll be a .zip file located on your Desktop
Simply upload the .zip file with your next post and we'll move on from there.

2)  Please do the following:
- open Event Viewer (run eventvwr.msc from the "Run" dialog)
- expand the Custom Views category (left click on the > next to the words "Custom Views")
- right click on Administrative Events
- select "Save all Events in Custom View as..."
- save the file as Admin.evtx
- zip up the file (right click on it, select "Send to", select "Compressed (zipped) folder")
- upload it with your next post (if it's too big, then upload it to a free file-hosting service and post a link here).

FYI - If we're looking for Event ID 41 errors (unexplained shutdowns), there's more info on that here:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2028504

While waiting for a reply, please monitor your temps with this free utility:  http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html

Also, I have these suggestions for starters:
1.  Get ALL available Windows Updates.  It may take several trips to get them all
2.  Get ALL available, compatible updates for your OS from the manufacturer's website (to include BIOS/UEFI).
3.  Start with these free hardware diagnostics:  http://www.carrona.org/hwdiag.html
4.  If all of the hardware tests pass, then run Driver Verifier according to these instructions:  http://www.carrona.org/verifier.html

My browser caused a flood of traffic, sio my IP address was banned. Hope to fix it soon. Will get back to posting as soon as Im able.

- John  (my website: http://www.carrona.org/ )**If you need a more detailed explanation, please ask for it. I have the Knack. **  If I haven't replied in 48 hours, please send me a message. My eye problems have recently increased and I'm having difficult reading posts. (23 Nov 2017)FYI - I am completely blind in the right eye and ~30% blind in the left eye.<p>If the eye problems get worse suddenly, I may not be able to respond. If that's the case and help is needed, please PM a staff member for assistance.

Thanks. First, here is the attached file from step #1.

During step #2, it is not allowing me to save the file for some reason. There is an error stating "One or more logs in the query have errors" and I think that's causing the issue.  I'll work on seeing if I can identify that file and perhaps not include it in the report.

Also, I should clarify what i mean by "shutdown". When it "sleeps" and consequently "shuts down", I am able to start it simply by moving the mouse. Similar to if it were sleeping. The difference being that it does in fact boot up and any active programs are no longer active.  If that makes sense.

I will work on your step 2 as well as the other bits of advice you had in your post.

Thanks

There's a bunch of BSOD's in the uploaded reports.

Your UEFI/BIOS (version N550JV.207) dates from 2013.  Please check at the manufacturer's website to see if there are any UEFI/BIOS updates available for your system.  If you are able to install the update through Windows (without booting from an external drive), then go ahead and update it.  WARNING - if the computer might shut down during this procedure, please don't do it, as this may physically damage the computer and prevent it from booting.

Although you appear to have a reasonable number of Windows Update hotfixes for this version of your OS, please double check for any new Windows Updates.  It only takes one update to cause a problem, so it's essential that you have all of them.  If you have troubles with Windows Updates, please post back and let us know.

Please download and install the Bluetooth drivers for your system - and for any Bluetooth devices that you may be using.

These devices have problems in Device Manager:

Bluetooth Audio Device    BTHENUM\{61118058-486C-4BB0-B4B8-ACE4DCADEC44}_LOCALMFG&0000\7&2CCD3E13&0&000000000000_00000000    This device cannot start.
Virtual Bluetooth Support (Include Audio)    BTHENUM\{CBECAB40-A2C8-4AB3-ADC1-DE0FE95D8600}_LOCALMFG&0000\7&2CCD3E13&0&000000000000_00000000    This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device.
Bluetooth LWFLT Device    BTHENUM\{DD533152-01F4-435C-ABFE-984BC21A2A65}_LOCALMFG&0000\7&2CCD3E13&0&000000000000_00000000    This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device.

Most of the BSOD's listed in the WER section of the MSINFO32 report blame USB.

What USB devices do you have installed?  Please list all - anything that is plugged into a USB port counts.

Also, please update the chipset drivers and the USB 3 controller for your system from the PC manufacture's website.

Not much significant in the Application and System log files.  No record of events at the time of shutdown that could have caused this problem.

As such, we also have to wonder about hardware, compatibility, or low-level driver issues.

The memory dumps seem to point at the Bluetooth drivers - so that's where I'd focus my efforts for now.

This includes the BIOS/UEFI update, the chipset/USB 3.0 driver updates, and the Windows Updates.

You may also want to uninstall McAfee temporarily - as it's drivers appear in most of the memory dumps.

Be sure to activate Windows Defender and the Windows firewall while testing.

Then, if you wish to return to using McAfee, just download a fresh copy and install it.

This older driver may be causing issues.  Please update it to the latest, W8.1 compatible version available for your system:
