Was in sleep mode and when tried to wake it up and shut system down, will not respond.  Black screen with the Dell insigna flashing but will not show anything else.  Have powered down and back on but still the same thing.  Any suggestions?

Can you get into safe mode?

Do you see any flashing lights on the computer?

According to the E520 manual there are diagnostic lights on the front of the computer. Do you have these?

http://www.manualslib.com/manual/227514/Dell-Dimension-E520.html?page=47#manual

Try powercycling the computer. Remove the power cord. Hold the power button down for 30 seconds. Attach your power cord and reboot.

Do you get a menu screen when you tap F12 at boot? This will have a diagnostic option.
