After a recent auto-update to my Windows 10 I now get a pop-up window upon startup.  See attached photo.

Can anyone offer suggestions for a remedy to this situation?  I have searched this forum and have not found this issue discussed here.

I used "Crap Cleaner" to find installed Microsoft Visual C++ versions. I found 11 installed versions.  I'm not even sure what they do or what they are for.  Are they critical to the operating system or can they be removed?

Thanks.

FYI - I have 20 different versions installed on my system.

I know that some of them are needed to run different programs that I use.

The easiest thing to do would be to uninstall them.

Then when a program that you use won't work - it should tell you that there is a missing program.

Then you could reinstall it.

As for those on my system - I probably should uninstall them - but I'm just going to wait until I purchase a new system in January.

My browser caused a flood of traffic, sio my IP address was banned. Hope to fix it soon. Will get back to posting as soon as Im able.

I have long asked myself that question. Unless one works with c++ code there really is no reason for it to be there. That is all it is for the reading;writeing and distribution of things written in C++ code.  It has always been available for download from Microsoft but why have it preinstalled unless it was to keep someone from noticeing it was being installed and asking why?  After all if it is preinstalled no one would notice it was even being used.

Not saying it is being used nefariously or anything like that.  Unless you are a coder there is just no use for the program to the average user.  The average users greatly outnumber the more technical users.

Just my opinion of course, but it is as good as anyother.

That's not it at all. You don't need to "work with C++ code" in order to need these packages. These are C++ libraries used by multiple programs, and therefore if you uninstall it and a program uses functions, methods, etc. that comes from a 2008 C++ library for example, your program will stop working. Read here:

The Visual C++ Redistributable Packages install run-time components of Visual C++ libraries. These components are required to run C++ applications that are developed using Visual Studio 2015 and link dynamically to Visual C++ libraries. These package can be used to run such applications on a computer even if it does not have Visual Studio 2015 installed. These packages install run-time components of these libraries: C Runtime (CRT), Standard C++, MFC, C++ AMP, and OpenMP.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/download/details.aspx?id=48145

You can replace 2015 by 2003, 2005, 2008, 2010, 2012, etc.

You should leave these programs there and not uninstall it. If you start uninstalling them randomly, I can guarantee you that a bunch of your programs will stop working and you'll have no idea why.

The issue here isn't with C++ libraries at all, it's a program that tries to launch on start-up and it crashes because of an error. What we need to do here is identify what program is trying to start, and why it crashes.

Aura,

Are you able to explain the rationale behind (and I know you didn't make that rationale, but may know it) keeping this endless chain of C++ libraries rather than making each successive release contain all of what had been in the previous releases plus whatever's entirely new or updated?

I have always found this particular approach to this collection of libraries, as well as some others, completely irrational.

Legacy purposes would be my guess. It's not always possible to use a newer version of a library, because the method you use might have been implemented differently and your program might not work properly using it, so you want to keep using the old one.

Thanks for the quick replies everyone.

Aura: I have pasted the MiniToolbox log below and I will go to the Autorun.zip in a few minutes.  Something that may be related to my error issues is that about a month or two ago my laptop (the one with the runtime error shown above) stopped communicating with my wireless router.  At first the problem was intermittent and within a week I was not able to get on-line via wi-fi at all.  I changed routers with no success and hard wired to the provider which works well.  I physically moved things around and now my confuser will get on-line via wi-fi but only within 6 ft. of the router.  I thought I would provide this info. in case it is important to find the remedy to the runtime issue.

Thank you for your assistance.

Alright received your .arn file via PM. Try to configure a clean boot.

Once done, restart your computer and let me know if the error message appears or not.

Hi Aura - I have been out of town for a few days.

I'm a little confused about the use of "clean boot state".  Will this routine FIX my problem or will it simply identify the issue(s)?  The instructions only tell me to reboot after the steps and then the instructions display . . . To configure Windows to use the normal startup state, simply undo the changes.  Do I need to keep the system configured for clean-boot-state all the time or do I have to undo everything I did per the instructions.  I'm not a computer guru and I'm a bit concerned that I'll really screw things up.  Thanks.

Doing a clean boot will help identify the issue. If you configure a clean boot, and the error message doesn't appear once you restart, it means that it is caused by a Program/Service set to start on startup and therefore it'll help us narrow down the list of possible culprit. Once we're done, you can just enable back everything under the Startup and Services tabs to go back to a full, normal boot.
