Do you get the same problem in Safe Mode?

Hey John, Yes, I did, but I was able to do a successful system restore and it seems to be working fine so far.

I thought it may have been a corrupt user profile but if a System Restore fixed it then hopefully that solved the problem.

If you type Run in the Search box and then explorer.exe > okay does explorer start?

Okay, sorry about that. That is normal. This is explorer, exe you are talking about and not Internet Explorer, correct?

Open regedit and drill down to this key

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Under the Shell subkey do you see only Explorer.exe under the data column?

I am not sure what the problem is. You can try running a sfc /scannow and see if that will fix and file corruption. As it stands now with explorer.exe not running you do not see any icons on the desktop, correct? What are the current symptons?

Just to be clear, when you say Explorer do you mean explorer.exe or Internet Explorer?

Can you open IE from the start menu after the system restore?
