The last few days windows explorer has been crashing on me.  I'm using Avast and Malwaresbytes Pro and I scanned my system and nothing was found.  I also ran the System File checker and no errors were found. I was going to do a system restore but I decided I'd rather find the culprit causing the issue instead.

I'm using a Dell Inspiron 3647 64 Bit. The processor is Intel® Celeron® CPU G1840 @ 2/80 GHZ. My intel HD graphics driver is on version 10.18.10.4226.

What's the next step?

Maybe a clean boot?

Hello hopper15. Can you please tell me whether this error occurs automatically or when you perform a particular action (like right-clicking, refreshing, opening a file/folder etc.)?

I've had this problem before. Windows Explorer used to crash whenever I right-clicked on a file or folder. Sadly, I could not fix it by any means. I had to re-install Windows completely. :(

Perhaps you will have better luck. :)

Here's the link to the thread that I created: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/595226/windows-explorer-has-stopped-working/

PS: If the problem does not occur in clean boot mode, maybe you'll be able to fix it easily.

Usually, I do not get online before 1:00 PM or after 10:00 PM (my local time).

So, if I do not reply to a thread where I am currently active, make sure you check my local time to see if it's time for me to be online or not. :)

Typically happens when I open a File/Folder.  I have a feeling a third party service is causing the problem which is why I might do a clean boot.

Do a clean boot and tell me your results in your next post. If the problem does not occur in clean boot, just disable the service which you think is calling the problem.

Here's how to use Speccy to publish a snapshot:

1. Open Speccy. This window will appear.

image.jpg

2. Click on the 'File' menu and then click 'Publish Snapshot...'

image.jpg

3. A dialog box will appear. Click 'Yes'. Optionally, you can also tick the checkbox at the bottom-left corner.

image.jpg

4. Another dialog box, with a URL, will appear. Copy and paste the link in your next post.

image.jpg

EDIT: Just use [Ctrl + C] to copy the URL, you don't need to click the 'Copy to Clipboard' button. In your next reply, just press [Ctrl + V] to paste the link.

NOTE: If even that fails, then I'm sure there's some problem with your clipboard. In that case, you need to type out the URL in your next reply.

Usually, I do not get online before 1:00 PM or after 10:00 PM (my local time).

So, if I do not reply to a thread where I am currently active, make sure you check my local time to see if it's time for me to be online or not. :)

Warning:  Disabling items in Services or Startup may leave your anitivius disabled until the process is ended.  For this reason I would suggest that you perform this process off line.

1.  Click on the Start orb rsz_1rsz_1rsz_start_orb_zpshjewtibd.png, then type msconfig.exe in the Search programs and files box.

2.  When msconfig is seen in the pane above the search box and under Programs, right click on it, then click on Run as administrator.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, you should enter the password or provide confirmation.

3.  Click on the General tab.

4.  Click the Selective startup option.

5.  Remove the check mark in the Load startup items  check box.

6.Click on the Services tab.

7.  Place a check mark in the Hide all Microsoft services check box, this will remove the Microsoft Services from the list but will still be running.

8.  Click Disable all, this will remove all of the check marks in the Services list, then click on Apply, then OK.  Click on Restart in the window that opens.

When the computer is restarted it will boot normally.

Do the problems persist?

I did a clean boot yesterday.  No explorer crashes so far.

I disabled everything but my AV though.  I know Avast is not causing the problem.

Place check marks in half of the service, then restart the computer.

If the problem comes back you will know that it is one of those services.

If is doesn't return remove the check marks in that half, then add check marks to the other half of the services and restart the computer.

Once you find which half the service is in remove half of the checks and restart the computer.

By now you should see how this process of elimination works.

Continue until you identify the services causing the problem, post what this service is in your topic.

Understood but I'll probably start on that tomorrow.  I just want to see if explorer runs smoothly the rest of today.

How often have these crashes be happening?

If they had been occurring fairly often and are not happening since yesterday I would suggest doing the process of elimination.
