Posted 26 July 2006 - 09:35 AM

I recently was infected with several different virus. Spysherriff, something that changed my browser every time I went to yahoo, and spyquake. I thought that I have removed them but now my computer is so slow. It takes for ever to start up, while in the internet the web pages freeze and skip. and programs are taking forever to load. it seems like my computer is trying to run multiple tasks at the same time. I am new to these help forums so please go easy on me. Thanks I hope you can help. here is my hjt log:

Hi there and welcome to Bleeping Computer!
As you may have noticed already, the forums are very busy at the moment and i have noticed your log has gone unanswered so far!
We look at the oldest logs first, and we were wondering that if you still need help.
Please start by posting a new HijackThis log in this topic and i will then be able to take a look!
Sorry for the delay - when you reply to the thread I will get a notification and will answer as soon as possible.
Thanks very much!
David

Hey epidemik9278

It is a good idea to print off these instructions:
This will be useful as there is a possibility some of the instructions will need to be carried out where internet access is not available.
You may also like to save these instructions in word/notepad to the desktop where they can be easily found for the same reasons as above.
A print out of the instructions would be a good reference to make sure you don't yet lost.
Also, it is important that you complete the instructions in the right order, and also that you don't miss any steps out!
If you have any queries about the process or just general questions, just ask.

There are a few steps I want you to complete to try and resolve the slow down on your computer.
A whole host of reasons might account for this slow down, but I will highlight the most prominent ones below.
On most computers malware is the most common cause, but at the moment I do not think this is the case.
You might like to limit the programs that are loading when your computer starts, you might have unneccessary software loading whn you boot your computer which is eating away at your CPU and ultimatley slowing down your computer. Many programs install a quick launch feature which is not needed; if you want to use the program you can start it up manually. The easiest way to see whether a program is needed at startup, you can use bleeping computer's own list, which gives an indication of whether the program is required/optional etc. Note that essential processes such as those for your anti-virus or your modem must be kept.
So, firstly click on start, then run and type msconfig. Then hit enter.
Click on the startup tab and a list of programs will appear.
You can compare the startup name with those on the startup list., link is below:
www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups

To stop a program loading at boot just remove the tick.
Click "Ok", and choose to restart.

You might like to try and clear clutter off your computer, and free up some space on your harddrive.
Old games, unwanted photos and unused programs could be a starting point.
You can also clear clutter such as temprary files by doing the following:
Go to start and click on the "run" button.
Type the following in the fox --> cleanmgr and click ok.
Let it scan your system for files to remove.
Make sure only Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are checked.
Press OK to remove them.

Next you can defragment your hard-drive...when was the last time you did this?
Windows puts new files in any available open space and defragging will cluster files closer together making your harddrive more efficient.
This saves wear and tear while speeding up programs.
1. Open My Computer.
2. Right-click the local disk volume that you want to defragment, and then click Properties.
3. On the Tools tab, click Defragment Now.
4. Click Defragment.
5. This process takes quite a long time, so be patient.

You might also like to read the following tutorial as additional infomation to the above:
These selfhelp instructions can be found here

Oh yeh and also try running the Windows repair facility:
Go to Start...Run...and type in "sfc.exe /scannow" (without the quotes) and press Enter. It may ask for your XP Installation CD. Once it's done, please visit Windows Update to ensure that you've got the latest hotfixes and updates (sfc.exe replaces system files when it runs).

I want to see a couple of short scans from you also.

1) Download GMER from Here
Right Click the Zip and Select "Extract All"
Double Click gmer.exe to launch the program.
Click on the Rootkit Tab and then click Scan.
It takes a while to run, once complete, copy the results to notepad and save them somewhere safe.
Post those results in the next reply.

2) Download Combofix to your desktop.
Doubleclick combo.exe
Follow the prompts.
Don't click on the window while the fix is running, because that will cause your system to hang.
When finished, it should produce a log, combofix.txt.
Post this log in your next reply together with a new hijackthislog.

Please post back with a new Combofix log and the GMER log.
David

Hey epidemik9278,

Well that log is looking clean, and I don't think there is any need for the GMER log.
I don't think this is caused by malware at all, and you cleaned up well after the previous infection.
Just a couple of thoughts:

- Did you install SpySweeper when you tried to cleanup the computer?
I have seen a few cases where the background guard service has caused a distinct slow down

- Did you have Norton installed before the slow down?
It is a major resource hog in my opinion.

- I see you didn't really disable any entries with msconfig.
In my opinion a bloated startup list is one of the major causes of a computer slow down.

- Have you checked out your hardware, do your specifications meet the system requirements?
Did you defragment the hardrive at all? Is it full?

Although I think it's unlikely a rootkit is present it's better to safe than sorry.
I want to run rootkit revealer, which will show any...rootkits

To use RootKit Revealer please make sure you are logged in as an Administrator to the computer.
  • Please download and unzip Rootkit Revealer to your desktop.
  • Please leave the defaults set as they are to:
    • Hide NTFS Metadata Files: this option is on by default
    • Scan Registry: this option is on by default.
  • Launch rootkit revealer on the system and press the Scan button.
RootkitRevealer scans the system reporting its actions in a status area at the bottom of its window and noting discrepancies in the output list. It may take a long time please disconnect from the internet and leave the PC to be scanned until it is finished.
  • The log can be very large please edit out the items in the following folders in the log : C:\RECYCLER\NPROTECT and C:\System Volume Information, if in the log, before posting it.
  • Please post the balance of the log here in this thread using Add Reply (please double check that it has all been posted as it may be too long for one post)]
