Hi

I have an issue that seems to be popping up whenever I play any game (have only tested a couple, will test more once I have posted).

Its a complete freeze (although sound continues), and if i try to tab out of ctrl-alt-del it does one of two things: nothing, or, screen goes black. I have had to hard reset each time. It didnt seem to like the hard reset either and I think in two of the four resets resulted in a blank screen again - another hard reset after a few minutes and it seemed to boot ok.

I have followed BSOD instructions, but not sure if that will help in these circumstances. I have also added the problem details.

· OS - Windows 8.1, 8, 7, Vista ? 10
· x86 (32-bit) or x64 ? 64
· What was original installed OS on system? 7 iirc.
· Is the OS an OEM version (came pre-installed on system) or full retail version (YOU purchased it from retailer)? OEM
· Age of system (hardware) Jan 2012
· Age of OS installation - have you re-installed the OS? Only when Win 10 rolled out

http://speccy.piriform.com/results/NbrZVLociHwKlSYJifyzpY3
· Power Supply - brand & wattage (skip if laptop) AURUM CM Series AU-750M

· Laptop or Desktop? Desktop

Description
A problem with your hardware caused Windows to stop working correctly.

It appears that the problem is back. But slightly different. Booted up a game this morning. Then came back and the screen was blank (little flashing light on the monitor showing no signal, lights on keyboard/mouse and computer still running).

Hard reset and screen didn't activate the first couple of times (had to hard reset each time). Finally it booted up properly. Checked reliability monitor but unlike yesterday there were no hardware errors listed. Will test again now, but since I had such trouble booting up something may die in the process and I might be forced onto tablet to try and resolve.

Your UEFI/BIOS (version 0301) dates from 2011.  Please check at the manufacturer's website to see if there are any UEFI/BIOS updates available for your system.  If you are able to install the update through Windows (without booting from an external drive), then go ahead and update it.  WARNING - if the computer might shut down during this procedure, please don't do it, as this may physically damage the computer and prevent it from booting.

Although you appear to have a reasonable number of Windows Update hotfixes for this OS, please double check for any new Windows Updates.  It only takes one update to cause a problem, so it's essential that you have all of them.

There are several ApphelpHardBlock errors in the WER section of MSINFO32.
I suspect that this means that you have incompatible software installed.
The ApphelpHardBlock message means that an incompatible program has been blocked, but it does not specify which program it is.
Please check your older software for compatibility with this version of Windows.

I've gotta run for dinner right now.

One other thing for you to look at (because of the STOP errors in the WER section of MSINFO32):  Please follow these troubleshooting suggestions:  http://www.sysnative.com/forums/bsod-kernel-dump-analysis-debugging-information/35-video-tdr-timeout-0x116-0x117.html#post29532
Also, please monitor your temps with this free utility:  http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html

I'll post more tonight or in the early AM (UTC - 5, East Coast of the US)

Sorry for the delay, had some family issues to deal with.

There are a number of Live Kernel Events (and they exceed the number of BSOD's) in the WER section of the MSINFO32 report

Please do the following:
- open Event Viewer (run eventvwr.msc from the "Run" dialog)
- expand the Custom Views category (left click on the > next to the words "Custom Views")
- right click on Administrative Events
- select "Save all Events in Custom View as..."
- save the file as Admin.evtx
- zip up the file (right click on it, select "Send to", select "Compressed (zipped) folder")
- upload it with your next post (if it's too big, then upload it to a free file-hosting service and post a link here).

FYI - If we're looking for Event ID 41 errors (unexplained shutdowns), there's more info on that here:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2028504

While waiting for a reply, please monitor your temps with this free utility:  http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html

There were also 2 STOP 0x144 errors related to your USB3 - more on that in a moment.

First off, I think that there's 2 problems here:

1)  There is a video problem that's showing STOP 0x116 and STOP 0x141 errors.  The latest memory dump was the STOP 0x116 error - so I think that you should continue with the troubleshooting from my previous post.

2)  There is a USB and a networking problem.  These errors (STOP 0x144 and STOP 0x133) seem to point to a USB networking device that uses the tap0901.sys driver.  This driver dates from 2013, so I think that first step would be to update it to the latest, W10 compatible version.  If there aren't any compatible drivers, then please uninstall the software and physically remove the device from the system in order to test it.  I would also suggest updating your AsMedia USB3.0 drivers - but as they don't appear in the memory dumps, I wouldn't consider it a critical task.

If all of this doesn't stop the BSOD's, please run Driver Verifier according to these instructions:  http://www.carrona.org/verifier.html

Hi.

Thank you very much for your suggestions. I will test them out over the next couple of days (note: issues have not reappeared and I played some games without issue so will wait until it reappears before doing any changes).

This tends to look similar to many other problems that we've seen with W10 being installed on well-used systems.

There are app problems, video driver issues, and networking issues in the Admin event log.

There's a couple of things to try:
1)  Run the following command in a Powershell window that's run as an Administrator in order to re-register the Windows Store apps:

Get-AppXPackage | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}
From this article:  http://www.thewindowsclub.com/re-register-windows-store-apps
Be sure that Edge is closed (in Task Manager).  Cortana will spit an error as it's still running - don't worry about that for now.

2)  Uninstall your antivirus, then use the removal tool for it (there's a list of most of them here:  http://www.carrona.org/avuninst.html ), then install a freshly downloaded, W10 compatible version.  Some A/V have difficulties with the upgrade, so removing them and then reinstalling them will help how they run.

3)  Download fresh copies of the latest, W10 compatible audio, video, and networking (wired, wireless, and bluetooth) drivers for your system.  Then uninstall the current versions from your system.  Then install the freshly downloaded versions.

4)  Get ALL available Windows Updates

5)  Get ALL available, W10 compatible drivers/programs from the manufacturer's website.  If some aren't compatible w/W10, check here about uninstalling them.

6)  Get ALL available, W10 compatible drivers/programs for any add-on hardware and any software that you installed previously.  If they aren't compatible, please uninstall them.

If this doesn't fix things, then post back so we can discuss the following options:
- continuing to attempt to fix this copy of the OS
- Reset of the OS (considering both the "Keep My Files" and the "Remove Everything" options)
- revert to the previous OS (both at less than 30 days, and at more than 30 days since initial update)
- revert to the previous OS with another attempt at installing W10 (I don't recommend this)
- clean install of the previous OS
- clean install of the previous OS, then update to W10 (only needed if a clean install of W10 fails)
- W10 clean install

Just running through troubleshooting now.

One question while I run through tips: There is no W10 bios update from the ASUS website. It appears support stops from 8.1. Should I bother trying to update it? (ie is it a priority?)

Once again thanks for all the help.

Cheers.

Yes it is a priority.  But there's no way to update it if an update isn't available.

Keep this in mind as we troubleshoot - as it will help you decide if this is a driver problem or a compatibility problem.

If it's a compatibility problem you'll have to decide if you can live with it or not.

The alternative is to revert to W8.1 if you can't live with a compatibility problem
