Ok so I got a bad virus on my computer with Xp Pro....I was having trouble deleting the virus and it was not letting me open any microsoft applications........I decided to just back up my stuff and re-install XP....i have an external hard drive so I backed up my music/movies and everything else I needed...I turned the computer off, put in my xp pro cd and began re-installing....I didnt even pay attention to the fact that my external hard drive was still plugged in......well to make a long story short I accidently deleted the partition on my external rather then my main internal c: drive.......I had everything backed up on there and I need my files....i am desperate here......now with XP pro installed virus free on my c: drive my external wont even show up in "my computer" but it does acknoledge that it has been plugged in usb......when plugged into a computer running 98se i was able to run active partition recovery...it took close to 13 hours and after it finished scanning just went back to the main menu and wouldnt let me recover or restore my files......the drives partition has been deleted but it has not been formatted...any help would be greatly appreciated......

thanks in advance,
-Stezieb

You need a hex editor to examine the drive and a lot of skill and luck.

Don't write anything to the drive, as it will make the portion of the disk you write to unrecoverable by anyone but an expert.

See if you can get any help with the hex editor at the following search:

I have never used one - but the link to Langa's pages should describe how to use it on one of his articles.

http://www.pcinspector.de/ is an excellent free recovery program. I've used it for several tasks before moving to GetDataBack from http://www.runtime.org because it was easier to use.

FYI - I did the same thing a couple of days back - and deleted the backup image for my laptop. Even with the recovery program the image was corrupted and I had to start over.

The moral is that no recovery program is perfect
