I have a Windows 7 machine that is very lightly loaded, it's main task in life is for my wife to play MahJongg on it with me using it for a very little web browsing and driving the printer.
But when I boot it the disk goes crazy working it's clacker off for about a half an hour. The disk is working so hard that it slows everything down even using the file explorer is a click now and come back later sort of delay?
So my question is what is the disk doing and how can I stop it doing whatever its doing?

Thanks in advance for all help.

Hi gurkle, and welcome to BC,

The easiest way is to click on start, then type in  Resource Monitor  click on that and when it opens there's a tab at the top that says disk

That will tell WHAT is using your disk. As for stopping said process/program that depends on what it is (post back with the info if at all unsure)

Hope that helps

Well that computer has 100% died now. Nothing at all happens when I push the power button to start it booting. Yes the power is turned on and the plug is in. I checked the power button and it is wired to the motherboard not the power supply thing.

See if powercycling the computer works. Pull the power. Hold the power button down for 30 seconds. Attach the power cord and try booting again.

The power button cable is supposed to be wired to the motherboard.

Thanks JohnC_21, I tried your suggestion but the computer remains dead ......

Do you have a make and model of the Computer? Some computers have a diagnostic light on the PSU. HP does this and some Dells have diagnostic lights.

It's a Compaq Presario SR5065AN desktop computer.

If you look at the back of the computer, the power supply has a green led. Is that lit?

Is the CPU fan turning? Did you follow the steps in the link I posted? If you are comfortable opening the computer and you have a multimeter, you can test the PSU. I would ground yourself on bare metal of the computer cabinet first. See this video.

If you need the data off the hard drive you can place it in an USB enclosure or use a USB adapter.

Yes JohnC_21 I followed your link and the green LED is on full time.

Nothing happens when I push the power button, no CPU fan and no other fans, everything is a complete zero.

Yes I am okay opening the box and I have a high quality digital multimeter but I don't know what cables going into or out of the power supply are what so also don't know what voltages should appear, I  presume that apart from the mains in the rest are all DC though.

Re the data on the hard drive I don't understand what you mean by placing it in an USB enclosure or use a USB adapter???

If you have the standard 24pin PSU connector then see this.

For other connectors
