Hi

Have been using Parental Filter (as a porn filter for my kid's safety). It has been a really effective product.

However, it isn't working at the moment. We had some malware (which we've sorted out on another forum on this site) but Parental Filter seemed to stop at the same time.

Now when I click the link to start it we get the message:

Parental Filter Error
Please run Setup again and,
1. Update MDAC
2. Update JET
Other causes are langauge file [lang.mdb] corruption. Restore by running setup again.

I've downloaded the latest version, run set up again to no avail.

I keep getting (from memory) the Update JET message.

Any one got any clues as to what might have gone wrong, or what may be a way forward?

Thanks
Brett

Did you uninstall the previous version, before installing the newer version.
Did you uninstall it using Add/Remove in the Control Panel?
Have you tried to uninstall it in Safe Mode, then reinstall the newer version again?
How to start Windows in Safe Mode
Is there a Help file included with this program, or a ReadMe.txt file in the program folder?

Is this the program you're using?
If it is, it looks like the program is free, but the Parental Filter Documentation is $4.95.

In the reviews of the program I read at this site, 2 out of 5 had trouble uninstalling it.
Reviews
Most of the review's were bad at the 5 sites I checked (the ones with reader reviews, which I believe was 3 of the 5).

I would suggest trying to get rid of this program, and look for another freeware alternative.
There seem's to be a couple of problems with this program, and finding any useful information is just about impossible, which makes troubleshooting the program, difficult.

Hi tg1911

Thanks for your response.

Yes, that is a link to the programme I'm using. And I found I have a copy of the manual in the folders. Because I've had the programme for a while, maybe I got the documentation when it was free. I shall do a bit of a read of it.

Interesting reading the reviews. I'm a 5 star person - Parental Filter has been fine for us and really good for us. And no problems - until this malware stuff. (Admittedly it might be the programme's fault and not the malware. But if I can get it going again that would be my preferred option given we have found it to be quite good.)

When we started having trouble I did decide to try to download the programme again. But it seems to have moved site from what was its home page, and/or been taken over by new people. When it didn't load properly I thought maybe it's been superseded. So I did go in search of an alternative freeware programme but couldn't find one - that worked anyway. Any pointers in this direction, or pointers where I can look/enquire would be appreciated.

Anyway, I can't remember what I did in the install/uninstall area. I have printed off your post, and will give all the permutations you listed a go.

Again, thanks for responding.
Brett

You're quite welcome, BrettM.

By all means, if the program works for you, and does what you want, then continue to use it.
I just wanted to point out that there wasn't very much support for the program on the net, so when you get a problem with it, you might not be able to find a fix.
I'm glad you got the program while the User Manual was included.
Hopefully the solution to your problem will be in there.

Did a little more searching and found a couple of more resources for you:
Parental Filter FAQ
Download MDAC and Jet (your User Manual should explain how to install these)

As far as suggesting an alternate program, I have no experience with these programs.
Some of our members do use them, and they have been discussed before.
I suggest you search through the AntiVirus, Firewall and Privacy Products and Protection Methods, and Web Browsing/Email and Other Internet Applications forums.
You should be able to find some suggestions there.
If not, and you're interested, you could start a New Topic asking for suggestions.
Just list what features you're looking for in a program, and what you need it to do.

Good luck with your problem, and let us know how it turns out ...... good, or bad.

Hi tg

Looks like i spoke too soon.

Followed your advice of installing/uninstalling - didn't seem to have a problem.

But along the way I think I've been exposed to malware by the programme!! Ewido did warn me at one point but I chose the ignore option!! I didn't think a porn filter programme could get me in trouble.

So I'm back off the hijackthis forum to sort it out.

I think Parental Filter and my days are numbered!! Looks like a commerical product here I come.

(I will follow your other suggestions though.)

Regards
Brett

Sorry to hear it didn't work out for you, Brett.
I hope you have better luck in your search for another program.
Good luck with your HijackThis log.

Well the saga seems to be over. Thought I'd let you know.

I've sorted out all the malware/hijackthis log stuff and that seems clear.

I reinstalled the original version of Parental Filter that I had and its working fine. (Mind you, I've got 7.022 I think and 7.024 didn't go too well. Ewido detected adware or something.)

So I'm very happy about that. Cos I find Parental Filter does the job I want!!

Thanks all the same tq.
