Have you run a check disk on the external drive?  Back up any important data prior to troubleshooting the drive.

Open Computer.  Right click the drive and select properties.  Switch to the Tools tab.  Press the Check button in the Error checking section.  This is from Windows 8 as I don't have a Windows 10 machine up at the moment, but it should be very similar.

Open any other folder having a similar content viz. video files and change the View setting to List
Next, go to Tools > Folder Options > View Tab
Under the View  Tab Click the Apply to Folders and Press Yes.

Now all the folders having a similar content will automatically show their content in the List view .
