Hello,

I recently moved and needed to install a wifi adapter in my Windows 7 desktop.  I got a Netgear AC1200 USB Wifi adapter.  My computer is a custom build based on a Gigabyte Z68XP-UD3-iSSD F2 (as reported in the @BIOS application).  When trying to install the Netgear I was getting a bad_pool_header BSOD, I think the error code was 19.  After some research I eventually went to the Gigabyte site and downloaded new drivers for the Etron USB, and the adapter successfully installed and worked fine for that first night.  I believe that was the 12th, and it was also working on the 13th.  Yesterday I got home from work and the computer was shut off, so I started it and it went through a scandisk check after saying it was not shut down properly.  Upon starting and logging in I was getting several boxes indicating crashing processes, eventually culminating in a loop where explorer.exe kept crashing, restarting, crashing, etc.  I rebooted and ran the system file checker which found a load of problems, and when it came up had the same behavior after logging in.  Even in safe mode everything continues to crash.  The faulting module is always wininet.dll.  I cannot use the event viewer because MMC claims it cannot find the snap-in, and upon closing that window MMC also crashes.

Eventually I restarted again and noticed that if I do not close the first box indicating a crash, then I can basically use the machine (I'm on it now posting this, with a wired instead of wireless connection).  I used that opportunity to uninstall the Netgear software, but that didn't fix the problem (I also unplugged the adapter).  I used to be pretty good at fixing problems back on XP, but admittedly I haven't done a lot of troubleshooting with Windows 7, and it this point I'm pretty stuck and would love some suggestions.  My backup schedule is less than ideal so I'd like to try and recover then do a backup before trying the nuclear option.

I manually ran SFC and it generated a log file which is filled with a lot of messages like this:

That's just for wininet.dll, but it lists a lot of other files as well.  Note that my CPU is an Intel, not AMD.

I'll go ahead and hit post, and then try to edit my post with additional details of the various error boxes as they come up in sequence.  Here's the first error box:

Problem Event Name: APPCRASH

Closing that, and I get these two in rapid succession:

Closing the GWXUX box doesn't cause another error to appear. Closing the explorer.exe box causes another one after it immediately restarts:

Closing that box causes the error loop with the exact same information as the above box. I can use Ctrl-Shift-Esc to open the task manager, and if I try to run a new task under the File menu, if I type any letter into the command to run I get another crash for taskman:

Problem Event Name: APPCRASH

Additional Information 4: 60e4ca99e6a2a89f07e31f8939dfdc56

I can, however, use the dropdown to select an existing command to run. I have these options:

cmd
explorer
odbcad32
iexplore -extoff
calc (why not?)

So, I can get into a command prompt, but I can't do much else. Although it looks like I am able to use the Browse button to find a file to run.

What are my next steps, any other information I can provide?

Thanks

After coming out of sleep, the Nvidia Capture Server also crashed:

Is there a reason why you chose to use USB over the PCI/PCIe versions?

I see many more problems with USB wifi adapters than I do with those that are plugged into a PCI/PCIe slot on the motherboard.

As you had problems with the USB 3.0 drivers, have you tried the USB wifi adapter in another USB port that wasn't controlled by the Eltron drivers?

Have you tried DISM?:

Then please run the following DISM commands to see if there's any problems with the system (from an elevated (Run as administrator) Command Prompt).  Press Enter after each one:

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

FYI - I have repaired systems using the last command even though problems weren't found with the first 2 - so I suggest running them all.

From this article: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh824869.aspx

My browser caused a flood of traffic, sio my IP address was banned. Hope to fix it soon. Will get back to posting as soon as Im able.

Just convenience.

I see many more problems with USB wifi adapters than I do with those that are plugged into a PCI/PCIe slot on the motherboard.

Me too, I have another Netgear USB adapter (which I really should have considered before buying this one) which also has problems in my home theater PC.

As you had problems with the USB 3.0 drivers, have you tried the USB wifi adapter in another USB port that wasn't controlled by the Eltron drivers?

At this point I'm trying to just remove the adapter and drivers (which I think I have) and stabilize the machine, even with the adapter no longer there I still get all the crashes.

Have you tried DISM?

I haven't, I'll give that a shot tonight and let you know what happens, thanks.

DISM isn't working, I only have the ScanHealth command available. If I run Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /? the options it lists are RevertPendingActions, spsuperseded, and scanhealth.  This is the summary for scanhealth:

Summary:
Seconds executed: 235
 Found 1541 errors
CSI Manifest All Zeros Total count: 3
CSI Manifest Failed Catalog Check Total count: 46
CBS MUM Corrupt Total count: 5
CBS Catalog Corrupt Total count: 4
CBS Registry Error Total count: 33
CBS Watchlist Package Missing Total count: 262
CBS Watchlist Component Missing Total count: 1188

This is what gets left in the log for RestoreHealth, I get error 87 that the command is not recognized in the context:

I downloaded and ran the System Update Readiness tool, and I used the install disc to run the startup repair tool, and neither of them really did anything. The startup repair tool said it didn't find any problems, and I'm still seeing the same behavior.

The OS appears really badly damaged.

I'd suggest starting with a Reset using the Keep My Files option.

If that doesn't fix it, then I'd backup your stuff and go with the Reset using the Remove Everything option.

Good luck!

My browser caused a flood of traffic, sio my IP address was banned. Hope to fix it soon. Will get back to posting as soon as Im able.
