I am running Win 7 and IE.

I was trying to install CM on a tablet connected to my computer. The install halted due to an unrecognized Gapps.zip, so I did a Google search (on my PC) for compatible gapps files to the rom I planned to use. One of the search results indicated a file that would work with any rom. When I clicked to save this file, it redirected me to a site, my IE browser flashed a screen on top of the site, teling me to call the number on my screen. In addition there was an audio loop ("Important Security Message... Call the number on your screen... Do not do any shopping  or banking..."). It kept running with the same message. The browser would not close.

My AVG virus did not alert me beforehand. I tried task manager to stop it but did not see a program or process that looked like it was linked to the site or message. After a very long time (had to turn off the sound) I decided to shut down the computer.

It restarted without a recurrence of the problem. I scanned using malwarebytes and AVG. No threats were found. Several scans later there still were no threats found but the computer runs slower when using IE. I feel like there is something there but cannot tell.

Hi cajunsaint,

Let's check for junkware.

:step1: Please download MiniToolBox, save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:

aak3k9.jpg

Click Go and note the saved Result.txt on your desktop, to copy into your reply

:step2: Please download AdwCleaner and save to your Desktop.

  • Right click and "Run as Administrator"
  • Click on the Scan button.
  • After the scan has finished, click on the Report button...a logfile will open in Notepad for review.
  • A copy of all logfiles are saved in the C:\AdwCleaner folder which was created when running the tool, or you can save it to the desktop to be easily found for your reply.

Please let me know if this application removes something you want to keep on your system

:step3: Please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.

  • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
  • Right click and "Run as Administrator".
  • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
  • On completion a log will open, note the saved JRT.txt on your desktop to copy into your reply

:step4: Please run MalwareBytes Anti-Malware.

  • To export the log click on History > then click your scan log > Export > text file
  • Save on your desktop

:step5: ESET Online scanner

Follow this link or right click and "copy link location", then paste the link into the address bar on your newly opened browser instance

Note: If using Mozilla Firefox you will need to download esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe when prompted then double click on it to install.

  • Firstly, Accept the Terms and click Start
  • Click Enable detection of potentially unwanted applications and click Start again.

ESET will then download updates, install and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.

  • When the scan completes, click List of found threats. Note: If no malware was found you will not get a list.

1446ya9.jpg

  • Click Export to text file and save the log on your desktop. Then click the Back button.

hry77t.jpg

  • Check Uninstall application on close and Delete quarantined files, then click the Finish button.

106x9g7.jpg

When you click finish the browser will not close but will offer you ESET products. Be aware the scan has actually finished and you need to close the browser window and reboot your computer to complete the process.

  • Please save the log to your desktop for your reply.

Copy and paste the output of the logs into your next reply.

How is your computer running now?

Thank you so much TsVk!

It appears there are no serious threats.

The reports contain a lot of personal information (my name) and local IP address...

Is it safe to post on a public forum such as this or will my post be edited before publication.

Sorry if this seems overly cautious.

Please advise;

Hi cajunsaint,

The logs should contain your local user name and your local network IP address (not global ip address), nothing that is identifying in any way. I would not ask you to do something that would compromise your security.

It's a pretty common type of scareware though (software that tries to scare you into paying money), and what you just did would normally remove it from your system. In fact there's a good chance it never infected your system at all, but just took over your browser for that session.

If you still feel that your machine's performance is impacted and you'd like to investigate please post the logs.

Kind regards

TsVk!

(feel free to edit out any information that makes you uncomfortable)

Here are the log results:

It looks like the Junkware tool took out toolbars.

Things seem smoother now.

Please tell me what you see.

Malewarebytes and Eset reported no threats.

I've looked through your log and can see nothing that is untoward. Your machine was having some issues but it appears to have stopped now.

Looks good :thumbup2:

FYI cajunsaint in case you encounter this again.

Tech Support Scamming using browser pop-up alerts with phony telephone numbers from "so-called Support Techs" advising your computer is infected with malware has become an increasing common and prolific scam tactic over the past several years. In some cases, the scam may be a web page which looks like a BSOD and includes a tech support phone number to call in order to fix the problem.

techcall1-300x214.jpg

You may want to read Your PC Is Infected Round-up by Chris Boyd at the Malwarebytes Security Blog.

In the majority of these cases the scammers use social engineering to trick a victim into spending money for unnecessary technical support or to buy an application which claims to remove malware. They typically use bogus error or warning messages (web page redirects & pop-ups) to falsely indicate that your computer is infected or has critical errors. This is done as a scare tactic to goad you into calling a phony tech support phone number shown in the pop-up alert and allowing the scammer remote control access to your computer in order to fix the problem. In some cases you are instructed to download malicious software which will actually infect your system. If the victim agrees, the support usually costs hundreds of dollars and often leaves the victim's computer unchanged or intentionally infected with malware.

More nefarious scammers will install a backdoor Trojan or Remote Access Trojan in order to steal passwords and other sensitive personal information which could then be used to access bank accounts or steal a person's identity. The warning alert may claim to be affiliated with Microsoft or Windows Support. Microsoft does not contact users via web page messages, phone or email and instruct them to call tech support to fix your computer.Closing your browser and then relaunching it usually eliminates the bogus warning message and is the best way to deal with these scams. If the browser freezes or hangs, you may have to close it with Windows Task Manager by selecting End Task.

Just to add... you can uninstall ESET Online Scanner via Programs and Features. The other tools can be removed using DelFix.

Download DelFix from here and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all running programs and start DelFix.
  • Place a checkmark in Remove disinfection tools.
  • Click Run.
  • DelFix will remove the most of the tools used during the cleaning process.
I do recommend that you keep MBAM for regular scans as it is a very good AM scanner.
