I have a netbook which came with Windows XP. It is pretty old so recently I had my friend wipe it and update it to Windows 7 starter. Before this the mic worked excellent. In fact a friend of mine even said my voice sounded better on my netbook than on my main PC. However, now the mic sounds like staticy popcorn in a lava bubblebath. I can't possibly use Skype voice or Team Speak now with it like this. Help?

This is the specs for my netbook:

Also for some reason Youtube videos stop working or lag so badly and then crash (Flash?).  Don't know if that is related or what but I thought I would add that in.

Download and run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor and post the results in your topic.

Did you install the audio drivers for Windows 7.  You need to download these from the computer manufacturer's website.

Already ran Speccy (as it is posted in first post) and just rebooted as I uninstalled Zonealarm which is what my friend installs on every computer he builds but I didn't want it as I just use windows Firewall (that is fine right??). He also always installs AVG as well as MooO System Monitor which is another program he swears by also with others he likes (Spybot - Search & Destroy, Screenshot, AVG, etc). I installed Skype and Team Speak after I took it home and realized then that there was a problem with the mic. Then when I put in the headphones the voice on Skype seemed a lot better but not perfect but then after rebooting there was no mic sound. So I rebooted again as well as uninstalled Zonealarm and put skype to not start on boot up. At this time I downloaded and ran the Toolbox. I will try the mic again soon.

I assume that he did run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor but I cannot be sure. He said he did update all the drivers so I can only take his word on that. How can I find out if any drivers need updates or are fine? I mean .. reliably and not through any spyware program that wants you to pay after giving you a list.

Here is the Mini Toolbox results:

Please run the Windows 7 upgrade advisor and post the results in your topic.  Do not wrap it in BB code.

I would suggest uninstalling Spybot S & D.  Years ago it was a good tool, but it has fallen behind what is now current and isn't as effective as it should be now.  You have Malwarebytes installed, this, your antivirus and firewall should be sufficient for keeping your computer clean.  Since you don't have the Malwarebytes Premium you need to update Malwarebytes prior to running scans with it, you should run scans with it at least once a month.

Just so you are aware, you should not have more than one antivirus installed.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Using more than one anti-virus program is not advisable. Why? The primary concern with doing so is due to Windows resource management and significant conflicts that can arise especially when they are running in real-time protection mode simultaneously. Even if one of them is disabled for use as a stand-alone on demand scanner, it can affect the other and cause conflicts. Anti-virus software components insert themselves deep into the operating systems core where they install kernel mode drivers that load at boot-up regardless of whether real-time protection is enabled or not. Thus, using multiple anti-virus solutions can result in kernel mode conflicts causing system instability, catastrophic crashes, slow performance and waste vital system resources. When actively running in the background while connected to the Internet, each anti-virus may try to update their definition databases at the same time. As the programs compete for resources required to download the necessary files this often can result in sluggish system performance or unresponsive behavior.

Okay I just checked the mic through "Recording Devices" and it seems to work through my headset. Unplugging my headset and testing my mic through the mic hole in the netbook sounds poppy but better than it did last time I tested and got sound. It seems it might be the mic in the netbook is going? I am not sure.

Also since you posted while I was posting I will also say that I forgot he also installed Malware Bytes for me. I do have the Premium CD at home I just have to put in the key or bring my external CD Drive here with the CD to install it. Also also know about more than one AntiVirus being bad. I only have one right? However I have also heard that AVG can "get along well" with other AntiVirus programs but I believe if you have a good one why have more than one anyway? AVG is not my preferred choice but his.

I am gettting the advisor now and will post the results next

Obviously Microsoft doesn't keep their links current.

Ok, now we know that this isn't related to the computer not being compatible with the upgrade.

I can see that this is a Acer Aspire one, but is it the 1-131,1-131M, 1-431, 1-143M?
