Hello.  Yesterday, when I came home my HP Laptop had crashed.  Earlier in the day it had seemed sluggish.  It was difficult to restart after I came home.  When I ran AVG and later Malwarebytes, the laptop crashed approximately 10-15 minutes into the respective scans.  They were not run at the same time.  I don't know if it is connected, but I did download the new Windows Updates on Tuesday or Wednesday.  Any help or thoughts on the matter will be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

Hi Brady555 & Welcome to the forums ^_^,

Could you please upload the ZIP file created by the below tool (Created by me) ?
http://omgdebugging.com/bsod-inspector/

Once the application completes, it will create a ZIP file which will be located on your Desktop. Please attach that file with your next post so that we could analyse the problem.

Let me know in case of any problems ^_^

Pranav, the file is to big to upload.  Is there another way to send it?  Or, am I doing something wrong?  Thank you for your help.

Upload it to a free file-hosting service (such as OneDrive or DropBox), ensure that it's shared, and then post a link to it here.

Not sure if I did this correctly.  I never used Drop box before.

Also, there are several other problems that have been happening recently that i did not really think to say but maybe they are part of the problem?  Since the BSOD's (possibly tied to the Windows update?), it takes a long time for my Laptop to connect to the internet, I now get a message that my Microsoft Securitys Essentials has stopped and AVG has been stopped.

No memory dumps in the uploaded reports.  Please try this:

Upload Dump Files:
NOTE:  If using a disk cleaning utility, please stop using it while we are troubleshooting your issues.
Please go to C:\Windows\Minidump and zip up the contents of the folder.  Then upload/attach the .zip file with your next post.
Left click on the first minidump file.
Hold down the "Shift" key and left click on the last minidump file.
Right click on the blue highlighted area and select "Send to"
Select "Compressed (zipped) folder" and note where the folder is saved.
Upload that .zip file with your next post.

If you have issues with "Access Denied" errors, try copying the files to your desktop and zipping them up from there.  If it still won't let you zip them up, post back for further advice.

If you don't have anything in that folder, please check in C:\Windows for a file named MEMORY.DMP.  If you find it, zip it up and upload it to a free file hosting service.  Then post the link to it in your topic so that we can download it.

Also, search your entire hard drive for files ending in .dmp, .mdmp, and .hdmp.  Zip up any that you find and upload them with your next post.

Then, follow the directions here to set your system for Minidumps (much smaller than the MEMORY.DMP file):  http://www.carrona.org/setmini.html
More info on dump file options here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/254649

These devices have problems in Device Manager

ZAM Helper Driver    ROOT\LEGACY_ZAM\0000    This device is not present, is not working properly, or does not have all its drivers installed.
ZAM Guard Driver    ROOT\LEGACY_ZAM_GUARD\0000    This device is not present, is not working properly, or does not have all its drivers installed.

Please uninstall the software associated with the ZAM program.

If the devices still remain in Device Manager after uninstalling the ZAM program, right click on each one and select "Uninstall"

If asked, also uninstall the driver software for this device.

Reboot and check to make sure that the problems are gone.

The WER section of the MSINFO32 report shows several BSOD's that blame your wireless drivers.

Please:

- download a fresh set of wireless drivers from the manufacturer's website

- uninstall the current wireless drivers

- install the freshly downloaded wireless drivers

- monitor for further BSOD's

Finally, I cannot tell if you have more than one antivirus and/or one firewall installed.

Please only use one of each.  More than one will cause conflicts (and can even let viruses onto your system).

If you have more than one installed, please uninstall all but one of them.

Good luck!

I have been running a disk cleaning utility; my bad.  I'll stop.  I had a BSOD this morning while running AVG so I ran Pranav's program again and have attached a link here.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/ixxj7qx96874l8p/LORI_PC_12_15_2015_10_06_25_AM.zip?dl=0

I don't know how to send the .dmp files to you.  I searched for those extensions, had a few files but they showed 0 bytes in the folder.

I used Revo Uninstaller and could not find anything with ZAM in it.

How do I identify the wireless drivers?  I ran an Intel Driver update and I also use Driver Booster 3, and they said everything is updated.

I use the free version of AVG and the paid version of Malwarebytes.  Anything else resides on the laptop that I may not be aware of....

Pranav's app will collect the memory dumps.

Don't worry about those that are 0 bytes.

ZAM is the name that we associated with these drivers when they were researched.
It's possible that another program uses them

A bit more research shows that it may be related to Zemana AntiMalware ( https://www.zemana.com/ )

Are you familiar with that?

If that program has been uninstalled, the simplest thing to do is to right click on the ZAM devices (in Device Manager) and select "Uninstall"

Reboot and check to see if the devices stay uninstalled.

I don't suggest using programs like Driver Booster.  IMO they cause more problems than they are worth.
As for the Intel utility, I haven't had much success with it either.

The best way to get updates (for a laptop) is to visit the support site for the laptop manufacturer.

In your case it's http://support.hp.com

Your wireless device is an  Intel® Centrino® Wireless-N 1000

Your current driver for it dates from 8/21/2015 and is version 15.11.0.9

While older BIOS isn't often a problem in W7 and earlier systems - your BIOS (version F.11)  is awfully old (dating from 2009).

Please check at the HP support site for a newer version - and if available, install it.

The memory dumps in the WER section of the MSINFO32 report blame your wireless drivers.

To fix this, please:

- download a fresh copy of the latest wireless drivers from the HP website.

- uninstall the current wireless drivers using Control Panel...Programs and Features (this is to remove corruptions in the current installation - if present).

- check in Device Manager to make sure that the wireless device is removed.  If not, right click on it and select "uninstall"

- then install the freshly downloaded drivers

- monitor for further BSOD's (other possibilities are interfering programs and hardware problems - so this is the first step).

Now, while we're seeing problems with the networking, the most recent BSOD shows an error with the disk hardware.

As such, you should run these free hardware diagnostics:  http://www.carrona.org/hwdiag.html

Please start with the hard drive diagnostic.

Let us know the results and we'll move on from there.

If there is a problem with the hard drive, it's imperative that you do the following immediately after the test fails:

- backup your data (there's no telling when the hard drive will die completely).

- create recovery media (if you don't have it, and if the system is capable of doing it).  If the hard drive needs replacing, you have to have a way to reinstall Windows on it.  And the recovery media is the easiest way.  In the event that you cannot make recovery media, you can likely order it from HP (here's a link on how to do it:  http://www.carrona.org/recdisc.html#hp )

We can walk you through replacing the hard drive and reinstalling the operating system.  Depending on the particular model it can range from easy (5 screws only) to difficult (case disassembly) - so it's important that we know the exact model number of your system.

Hi.  I deleted the ZAM stuff from the device manager.  I have tried several times last night and today to back up my files on a Toshiba itb external drive that I use for that purpose and the operation failed each time.  I finally tried an older Seagate external back up (I think it worked, I don't see a "back up failed" message but I think the laptop crashed again.  Sheesh.  I ran Pranav's BSOD report again.  The link is below.

I updated all my drivers ( I think) on the HP site.  I believe I updated the wireless drivers as well but not the way you described.

I went to the carrona link, I found it somewhat intimidating.  I downloaded the windft tool, but it didn't "see" my drive.

Where does that leave me?  What else should I do?  Thx again.

Sorry about the carrona.org site being intimidating, I try to keep it as straightforward as possible.

Try following things one line at a time.  If you have questions, post back here and we'll answer them as they come up.

The DFT may not work.  We've seen problems with it since the transition from IDE drives to SATA drives.
Try running the Seagate Seatools test instead.

Simple BSOD problems often take 2 pages of posts before they're fixed.

More complicated one's can take up to 4 to 6 pages.

All of the memory dumps point to disk problems.

So completing a disk test is the most important thing right now.

Hi.   I have not been able to back up my files.  I keep getting a Back up Failed" or "Back Up Incomplete" or "Back Up Canceled" I tried using 2 different external back ups.  Before I start doing stress tests on the hard drive, I'd like to have a back up done.  Any suggestions on what the back up problem might be?  Thank you.

If the hard drive is failing, you may not be able to back it up (or the backup may have errors or be incomplete).

If it's failing, each time you try it makes it more likely that it will die completely.

If the data is critical, the best thing to do is to get a pro to do it for you.

Basic copying of the data can cost up to $100 (US)

More advanced data recovery can cost $250 to $500 (US)

Recovery from a dead hard drive can cost $2,000 (US) or more

It's better to get it done sooner rather than later - the chances of success at a lower price point are greater.

If you're going to do it yourself, the easiest thing to do is to just copy the Users folder to another drive.  Don't use backup utilities as they may fail.
If the copy fails, then you'll be pretty sure that it's a problem with the HDD.

Hello usasma, sorry for the delay in my response.  I was very concerned about proceeding with the stress testing since it seemed to my eyes that it could hasten the end of my hard drive. Couple that with not being able to back up my files, I hesitated until I bought an entry level Lenovo lap top.  I've been able to transfer my files to that laptop.

On a side note, do you know of any program that can identify and delete duplicate photos?  The new Windows 10 laptop has Microsoft OneDrive and the program I used to move my files was placing them there rather than my 1TB hard drive, I ran out of room and after some fussing around, I have everything on my C Drive but in the process I may have duplicated portions of my photos once or twice.  Crud.

Anyway, I ran the memtest from the carrona site yesterday.  After about 45 minutes, I started getting lines of information highlighted in red, I'd say about 10 or more lines, but then the laptop crashed.  Is there a report I can generate and send to you?  What should I do next?  Thx.

PS: Happy Holidays!

I'm not aware of photo programs - I'd suggest that you post over in the Graphics Design and Photo Editing forums.  The experts there can help you out.  Here's a link to it:  http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/f/37/graphics-design-and-photo-editing/

The red lines mean that at least one of the memory sticks failed the test.

Read further down on this page to see how to figure out which stick/slot is to blame:  http://www.carrona.org/memdiag.html

Start with Step 7

Good luck!

I read Step 7 and I will start that testing sometime in the next week or so, but, do these results indicate that the problem may just be in the Memory sticks (is that the RAM?) and not necessarily the Hard Drive?  A memory stick issue sounds like that would be an easier problem to resolve that replacing the hard drive.  Or, am I just mixing up terminology and concepts?  What is the "motherboard" that John Carrona mentions as a possible issue?

As always, thank you for your help.
