What happened when you booted the Windows Vista OEM or MS DVD - and tried that approach?

Thanks Roland.

Sorry, I don't understand those terms.

All I can tell you is that System Restore has failed completely and that every

time I try to create a restore point I get that error message.

Restore points are no longer stored either.

Do you have any backups of your OS partition and your data partition?

That error is kind of hard to track down. Can you do a system restore in Safe Mode?

In a command prompt type the following

vssadmin list providers

What is the output?

Also make sure the Volume Shadow Copy is enabled in Services.

Are you using avast for an AV?

AV is Microsoft Seurity Essentials.

Provider Name Mirosoft Shadow Copy Provider 1.0

Provider Type System

Provider ID b5946137 7b9f 4925 af80 51abd6 ob20d5

As it is past midnight I will have to leave it at that for today.

Thanks again.

Yes, it should be set for Manual. No problem, I am starting to run out of ideas.

You can try typing sfc /scannow at an elevated command prompt tomorrow. If that does not work then it may be a good idea to post in the Crash Forum as somebody there can look at your CBS logs which can provide a clue as to the problem.

sfc /scannow. did not indicate anything.

Position still the same.

Will now post in Crash Forum as you suggested.

Very many thanks for all your help.

Hello Celtic, Roland is right in that it sounds like WSR is compromised (which isn't that hard to do). Since you don't have a disk image it's likely you're going to need to do a fresh install of the OS. You may want to look into both replacing WSR as well as implementing some sort of disk imager into your regime. In terms of replacing WSR you might want to look into the freeware Rollback home edition. In my tests it doesn't get compromised like WSR does.
