I have ATT Uverse at home with a wireless set up using an Arris NVG589 router. Can I improve the wifi range and speed by installing a Linksys AC1900 router behind it?

If so, does anyone know the correct way to connect it?

Welcome to Bleeping Computer.

Here is an article about using an old router as a Wireless Access Point.  That sounds like what you are looking to do.
