Hi: Got a strange problem...Windows 10...Dell Alienware 52...When I attempt to either restart or start from powered off, the system hangs at the initial screen...Guess you would call it the Bios screen...Never gets to Windows...In order to get things going, I have to disconnect the power and reconnect...Then it runs fine for a few start/stop cycles and does it again...Customer Support had me take the cover off of the computer and disconnect and reconnect both the SSD (boot) and the main HDD...That fixed it too for a few cycles, then the same old stuff...The Support tech said that the system "occasionally" collects static electricity or a charge of some sort and it is necessary to do this now and then...Sounds a bit strange, as I have been computing for many years and have never had this occur...Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks a lot...

Sounds a bit strange to me also - but I also don't have a clue as to why it's happening.

As it hangs at the BIOS/UEFI screen, my first question would be "Have you updated the BIOS/UEFI to the latest version available from the manufacturer?"

Let's start with these reports:

1)  Please provide this information (even though you may not be reporting BSOD's) so we can provide a complete analysis (from the Pinned Topic at the top of the forum):  http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/576314/blue-screen-of-death-bsod-posting-instructions-windows-10-81-8-7-vista/

2)  Please do the following:
- open Event Viewer (run eventvwr.msc from the "Run" dialog)
- expand the Custom Views category (left click on the > next to the words "Custom Views")
- right click on Administrative Events
- select "Save all Events in Custom View as..."
- save the file as Admin.evtx
- zip up the file (right click on it, select "Send to", select "Compressed (zipped) folder")
- upload it with your next post (if it's too big, then upload it to a free file-hosting service and post a link here).

FYI - If we're looking for Event ID 41 errors (unexplained shutdowns), there's more info on that here:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2028504

While waiting for a reply, please monitor your temps with this free utility:  http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html

Nothing significant for this problem in the Admin log file.

Please upload the other report (from item 1)

Here's a link to the Sysnative/perfmon reports topic:  http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/598801/reports-attached/#entry3881681

Nothing significant in the perfmon report.

Many hosts file errors in the System log file.

Have yoiu done anything to your hosts file?

There are a number of these types of services listed as having problems in the System log file:  User Data Access_680d9 service

Yet I cannot locate them in the MSINFO32...Services entry.

Have you scanned the system for malware?

Try these free scans (from this link:  https://www.us-cert.gov/ncas/alerts/TA15-286A )

       F-Secure

       https://www.f-secure.com/en/web/home_global/online-scanner (link is external)

       McAfee

       http://www.mcafee.com/uk/downloads/free-tools/stinger.aspx (link is external)

       Microsoft

       http://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx (link is external)

       Sophos

       https://www.sophos.com/en-us/products/free-tools/virus-removal-tool.aspx (link is external)

       Trend Micro

       http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ (link is external)

The above are examples only and do not constitute an exhaustive list. The U.S. Government does not endorse or support any particular product or vendor.

Beyond that I'm thinking that there's a hardware problem - maybe an under-performing power supply?

Please disconnect anything that's not needed to boot/run the system and see if that helps.

Hi Again: I can't begin to thank you for the extensive analysis of my computer and my problem...I scanned the computer with several of the programs you suggested and found a couple of minor adwares and a few pups...Then I re-read your message and really saw the last line about an inadequate power supply...I realized that I was using a battery backup unit that was at least 7 years old! I have replaced it with a new, really good surge supressor, and guess what? The problem has gone away! I would have never considered this in trying to solve the problem! I fugured that if the system was running, it was running...Thanks again for the great favor you have done for me!

Steve

Boot issues (before Windows loads) are commonly due to several things - of which power problems is one of them.

I'm glad you got it sorted out.  Thanks for letting us know!
