I recently purchase a Dell laptop which shipped with Windows 10 Home. However I have a Windows 8.1 Pro key that I would like to upgrade to Windows 10 Pro. SO right now I have Windows 10 Home installed and cannot upgrade to Pro using my 8.1 key. I tried inputting into the activation windows in settings and in the store tab and both of them give me the same error code. Everything I read online says this should be possible, so is anybody else having issues with this? Any help would be greatly appreciated, Thanks.

Can you try to download the Windows 10 Pro ISO, and do an upgrade over Win 10 Home? Enter your 8.1 Pro key when asked.

Only Windows 10 1511 November update support activate by 8.1 or 7 key. Windows 10 10240 doesn't support.

You posted the thread in wrong forum, it should be in Windows 10 Support.

That was the first thing I tried, but there was no clear way to download the Pro iso, only a generic Windows 10 iso which (I guess) installed Windows 10 Home by default because that is what is registered to my computer. Do you know of a link to an actual Windows 10 Pro iso?

Sorry about that, I'm sort of new here.

You can use the Media Creation Tool from Microsoft to download the ISO. The ISO is large so it might take some time to download depending on your internet speed.

If this Win 8 key...relates to an OEM system...you will not be able to use it for upgrading a different system.

batman1234 - I used the media creation tool to install Windows 10, but becuase I have Windows 10 home built in to my system it didn't even prompt me for a product key and just imply installled the home version. If I could find an acutal Windows 10 Pro iso then I think that might fix my problem.

hamluis - the 8.1 key is not OEM, its retail. I got it through my Microsoft DreamSpark account through my school.

You can use the Media Creation Tool to download the ISO for Windows 10 Pro.

When Media Creation Tool launches, select "Create installation media for another PC" and choose your language, edition (In your case Windows 10 Pro) and architecture.

Well is the Windows 8.1 Pro OEM or retail? If OEM you can't move it to another PC an activate (without calling MS).  Typically Dell willallow you go go from Home to to Pro for $50. You can do an upgrade from within Windows but it cost more then 50.

@bobjimmy123

The Pro dvd you made is not really a pro dvd. The home key from the dell bios overrules it and installs the home version.

You have to force the Pro version to install.

Maybe this works (it works for win 8)

1. Use the mediacreation tool to make a usb installation stick, or copy/extract the contents from the iso to the stick

2. Create ei.cfg and pid.txt files and copy to the stick
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh824952.aspx?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396

3. Start setup from stick

Priority for the key is:

1. pid/ei

2. bios

3. entering key during installation.

(removing the key from the bios is maybe not the best solution)

I don't think you need to force the Pro version to install.

I have a PC with OEM Win 10 Home and I can just upgrade to Win 10 Pro Retail using the ISO, without doing anything.

OEM key is not removable from BIOS.

Thanks everbody for your thoughts. I FINALLY solved the problem. In order to use Pro instead of my Home version, I had to switch to Pro using the generic Windows 10 Pro key. After that, I had to activate it with my 8.1 Pro key. I hope this helps anybody with this same issue, and thanks again everybody for your thoughts.

Glad we could help. Please also make sure that you are running Windows 10 build 10586.17, which is the latest build. :)
