System not responding/hanging forever, please help

Hi,

 

I am in dire need of help at this moment in time. My laptop has gone from adequate system response to extremely irratic and non responsive in the past week. I would not ordinarily post to a tech site with system response issues, but this time I really need some help figuring out what is causing the laggard performance. I use this laptop for college classes and some surfing along with some excel and word. Nothing much else and I try to keep it as lean and clean as I can possibly manage.

 

Laptop is HP 6930p

Windows 7 os

Norton Antivirus premium

MBAM premium antispyware

 

I uninstalled AOL computer check up which worked well for a few days then I believe the issues started to appear. It was eventually uninstalled and system performance seemed faster but now periodic hangs and non responses are the order of the day. Really really annoying to find that everything takes approx 15 to 30 seconds to actually respond. That is from opening an excel spreadsheet to closing a web window. Sometimes nothing happens and I resort to restarting my system. Lets see if we can figure these niggling issues out before taking it to my local pc tech.

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.
 
Checkmark the following checkboxes:
  List last 10 Event Viewer log
  List Installed Programs
  List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
 
Click Go and paste the content into your next post.

Have you tried running the Windows disk defragmenter and disk cleanup utilities?  These should be your 1st stop for a slow system.  Run them in Safe Mode if you have to.

First thing I would do...download/run the SeaTools for Windows diagnostic (do not use any of the other functions which may be available on the Seagate tool.

Then tell us whether the drive passed or failed.

Drive has passed by using the Sea Tools Diagnostic Tool from the link above.

 

I will try to perform a disk defrag and cleanup from Windows tools.

 

It could take a few hours so best to let it run overnight.

 

I will report back on what improvements, if any, happen after running these two utilities.

The tools mentioned above...will not overcome what seems to be obvious (damaged profile) and what may not be so obvious (damaged registry).

 

You can approach it from the perspective of the damaged profile first...read the following, please.

Open the Advanced Boot Options and select Last Known Good Configuration.

Thank you guys for all your input.

 

I ran the windows disk cleanup and found over 1.3gb of windows update files to be deleted. Then ran the disk defrag from windows. I  rebooted the laptop and my word, things have really improved : not as many system hangs or freezes as before. One thing I have noticed is that when I have skype running in the background, then some slowness when accessing firefox or ie. I may have to monitor having the skype program closed when using the net in the future. Other than that , the advice given by everyone here helped narrow down the causes to annoyingly slow laptop, from just a few days back.
